As director J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” prepares to wrap up its record-setting theatrical run, some tantalizing details about Disney/Buena Vista’s upcoming Blu-ray release have been revealed.
According to Blu-ray.com, Buena Vista Home Entertainment will drop the seventh feature film in the “Star Wars” saga in a three-disc set comprised of two Blu-ray discs (BDs) and one DVD. In addition, “The Force Awakens” set will include iTunes and Google Play digital copies for PCs, smart phones and tablets.
Per Blu-ray.com, the three-BD set of “The Force Awakens” will be released in three editions – the basic 2D 1080p hi-definition BD, the 3D 1080p for three-dimension HDTVs and compatible players, and a Disney Store.com exclusive that comes with a lithograph set. Though there’s no pricing information on the Disney Store exclusive release, Blu-ray.com and Amazon predict that the list price will be set at $39.99. However, consumers can pre-order it from Amazon for $19.99 – a 50% savings from the suggested retail price.
Although Blu-ray.com’s listing does not have a release date, High-Def Digest and other fan-geared websites have revealed that “The Force Awakens” will be released in less than two months after the end of the film’s theatrical run. Per a recent article by Tom Landy, “Amazon says the release date will be April 5.”
Set 30 years after the events in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” J.J. Abrams’ blockbuster film has set all sorts of box office records. According to IMDb.com, the first Episode in Disney/Lucasfilm’s long-awaited Sequel Trilogy has earned (as of February 14) $2,026,964 worldwide, with a record-setting domestic gross of $914,838,264. “The Force Awakens” is now the third top earning movie in history, topped only by James Cameron’s “Avatar” ($2,787,965,087) and “Titanic” ($2,186,772,302).
Though there aren’t many specific details available about the features in the three-disc sets, it’s likely that one BD contains the feature film with commentaries by the director, cast and crew members. The second BD will be devoted to behind the scenes extras, and the DVD will contain the film on standard definition for DVD players and older PCs with DVD-ROM drives.
