Today, Billboard and dick clark productions released the 2016 Billboard Music Awards’ finalists in 43 categories including one that we Country Music fans love most – the Billboard Country Music category finalists. The announcement heralds “big performances, unexpected collaborations and much-discussed pop culture moments.” According to the press release received today, the awards honor the most successful music artists “based on the reporting period of tracking dates March 23, 2015 through March 17, 2016 and Billboard chart dates April 11, 2015 through April 2, 2016.”
Hosts for the Awards events, Hip-hop artist and actor Ludacris and internationally acclaimed music artist Ciara also announced the finalists on today’s 8 a.m. EST show ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The hosts revealed finalists in six categories for Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist, Top New Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Hot 100 Song. After the GMA broadcast, Billboard’s Music Award’s Facebook and Periscope were buzzing with five additional categories and ABC News’ wrapping up the list of finalists for remaining categories via their live stream.

Country Music category finalist Carrie Underwood returns from Billboard’s 2015 Awards for the shot at Top Country Artist and Top Country Album with Storyteller. Sam Hunt is a three-category finalist – the most categories of any country artist of 2016- Top Country Artist, Top Country Song (“Break Up In A Small Town” and “Take Your Time”) and Montevallo for Top Country Album.
Also up for Top Country Artist and Top Country Album is Chris Stapleton. Chris swept the AMA’s and his album Traveller just recently jumped from Number 8 to Number 2 on the Billboard 200. It will be a tough battle for Luke Bryan (“Kill The Lights”) and Zach Brown Band (“Jekyll + Hyde”) for Top Country Song and Top Country Artist. Adding to the difficulty in guessing the winner for Top Country Song, the finalists include Little Big Town “Girl Crush”, Thomas Rhett “Die A Happy Man” and Chris Young “I’m Comin’ Over”.
According to Billboard, Music Awards finalists “are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music.”
