The St. John’s River in Jacksonville might be big, but the upcoming musical at the Alhambra Theater & Dining will make a big splash in Florida. In 1985 “Big River” opened at the Eugene O’Neil Theater and ran for more than 1,000 performances. Now, “Big River” opens at Jacksonville’s Alhambra Theatre & Dining on February 18th, for a welcomed engagement.
In his opening notice for the book “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” author Mark Twain writes, “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.” And so starts the novel that turned into a Tony® Award-winning musical 100 years later. “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was written in 1884.
About the Show: Propelled by an award-winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, “Big River” provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana. Twain’s timeless classic takes us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” You will meet: The Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck’s partner in crime, Tom Sawyer; Huck’s drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; & the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes along with her trusting family.
About the Menu: Executive Chef DeJuan Roy creates a new menu for every show, themed to the show’s plot and script. For “Big River”, Chef Roy takes us on a memorable trip down the Mississippi with a menu that includes:
First Course: chicken gumbo with dirty rice or Arcadian lettuce salad with ripe tomato, red onion and cornbread croutons with buttermilk dressing. Second Course: Southern-style fried catfish with bacon and cheddar cheese grits and Brussels sprout slaw, or pork ossobuco with herb mashed potatoes and rapini, or maple-glazed chicken with couscous, apple and black-eyed peas or eggplant parmesan with linguine marinara.
