According to the TimesNews.net on Monday, Frank Theaters is bringing an IMAX Theater to the Kingsport Town Center. This is major news for the city of Kingsport and the entire area. This IMAX theater will be the latest and greatest available and the only one like it in the entire Southeastern United States. It will employ the newest technology: 4K3D IMAX laser projection. Kingsport will only be the seventh city in the nation to have one like it.
Frank Theaters’ expansion at the former Fort Henry Mall will be complete by the end of the year. The mall’s owner, Somera Capital Investment, will be moving forward with a long-awaited mall renovation. Frank’s expansion took longer than expected due to some legal obstacles, but the exciting changes are now in sight.
There may also be a new anchor store for the Kingsport Town Center that could once again make Kingsport an important shopping destination again. The mall is still busy, but, like many malls, it has an overabundance of empty stores. The excitement of the Pinnacle development in Bristol has overshadowed Kingsport’s retail offerings, but the addition of the IMAX theater will probably level the playing field a bit.
The IMAX website describes the “IMAX Experience” in great detail. There is nothing left to chance in the whole process. It’s not just a bigger screen or a louder speaker that makes IMAX different. It is amazing detail in sight and sound that is the result of years of technology that put the IMAX movie experience light years ahead of the others.
If the Kingsport Times-News Editorial Board are correct, Frank Theaters and their expansion at Kingsport Town Center may put Kingsport light years ahead of its sister cities in the Tri-Cities. Many local residents just didn’t see this coming.
