Many toy companies at last month’s Toy Fair showed a renewed emphasis on wood, and Bif Bang Pow! was no exception.
The Simi Valley-based supplier of pop culture-related action figures, toys and collectibles unveiled new wooden nesting doll product based on the traditional Russian matryoshka doll-inside-of-a-doll nesting system, starting with seven-piece, hand-painted (with limited decals) The Big Bang Theory Nesting Dolls, featuring the popular characters Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Raj, Amy, and Bernadette, ranging in height from one to seven inches. The dolls are part of a major Bif Bang Pow! product release commemorating the 200th episode of the venerable hit TV sitcom.
Also on display were Batman Rogues Wood Nesting Dolls—a five-piece set of Joker, Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin and Harley Quinn, all covered in 360-degree hand-painted artwork with limited decals and ranging from two to six inches tall. A Batman Family Wood Nesting Dolls set of five further features Batman, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Alfred Pennyworth.
Likewise, the Justice League Classic Wood Nesting Dolls set of seven includes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.
“There’s a lot of plastic in the marketplace and we wanted to be different, with more of a retro style of action figures and toys,” said Bif Bang Pow!’s product marketing specialist Samantha Ordoñez of the company’s move to wood. She noted another new product, part of co-founder and president of sister distribution company Entertainment Earth Jason Labowitz’s continuing merchandise commitment to fave band KISS—the KISS Destroyer Pin Mate collection.
In fact, Bif Bang Pow! is launching a new Pin Mate line of collectibles with the KISS Destroyer Pin Mate collection, a set of retro-styled miniature wooden figures measuring about two-inches tall, each individually numbered and featuring 360-degree artwork of hand-painted details and some decal elements. As the KISS title indicates, the band members are in full make-up and costumes inspired by the Destroyer album era (1976).
Forthcoming Pin Mate sets will showcase characters from DC Comics, Marvel, Star Trek, and more.
Speaking of Star Trek, Bif Bang Pow! showed new 50th Anniversary Star Trek merchandise at Toy Fair, along with new licensed items from DC Comics and Marvel, The Big Lebowski, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Penny Dreadful, Flash Gordon, and another Bif Bang Pow! mainstay, The Twilight Zone.
Among new Twilight Zone offerings at Toy Fair were color additions to its 3 3/4-inch line of black-and-white Twilight Zone action figures, all limited and numbered, in retro style with five points of articulation, and hailing from classic episodes. Included are Dr. Bernardi, the bandaged patient and nurse from “Eye of the Beholder”; Henry Corwin, in Santa Claus, costume from “The Night of the Meek”; Anthony Fremont from “It’s a Good Life,” complete with his jack-in-the-box accessory–who was once Dan Hollins before Anthony transformed him; and the three-eyed Venusian from “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up.”
