Paleontology is the study of fossils found in the sedimentary rock layers called the fossil record. Paleontology is not archaeology which is the study of human artifacts such as mummies and pottery. Paleontology is the secular view of fossils while biblical paleontology is the creationist view of fossils. Both disciplines can work together at a site during a fossil dig but the line is drawn because of the two different timelines for these fossils. Paleontologists with the secular view believe the fossils found in the rock layers are millions upon millions of years old depending on what layer they are found in called the Geologic Column. Biblical paleontologists have a different view on the age of fossils. They believe the sedimentary rock layers were laid down during the yearlong worldwide flood of Genesis 6-8, only thousands of years ago .Dinosaurs lived all at the same time and not at different eras or periods of time.
Secular paleontologists believe that there was three major eras. The three eras were Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, and Cenozoic Era. The era the dinosaurs lived in according to secular paleontology was the Mesozoic Era, which was broken down into periods: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. The period most talked about by secular paleontologists is the Jurassic Period. The largest well known dinosaurs are supposedly from this period of time. But what is funny about this period is that they found modern bird, reptile, and mammal fossils in this same rock layer of the Jurassic Period. My question is this. Could these rock layers be younger than what scientists say they are? How could you find modern animal fossils with dinosaur fossil bones if this layer was 65 million years old.
Even though the fossil record is accurate, the geologic column is not. The geologic column is a made-up, timescale by man that was contrived long before carbon-dating was even thought of. The three eras were thought up in the 19th century. Paleozoic (1838), Mesozoic (1841), and Cenozoic (1841). On the other hand, biblical paleontologists believe the Paleozoic Era was the beginning of the worldwide flood, Mesozoic Era was the middle of the flood and the Cenozoic Era was the last part of the year long flood. This worldwide flood occurred about 4,500 years ago. The fossil/strata theory is genuinely archaic. The basics of the theory were devised when very little was known about strata or fossils. But geology and paleontology have been saddled with the geologic column ever since.
We can thank some of the secular paleontologists (Marsh, Cope, Douglass, Gilmore, Sternberg and many others) that gave us the excellent specimens of fossil dinosaurs and the thousands of men and women who have dedicated their lives to finding, cleaning, cataloguing and storing millions of fossils. The work they do is time-consuming and exhausting; yet it has not provided the evidence they sought with the timescale of the geologic column.
I am a creationist and biblical paleontologist that believes God created all the creatures found in the fossil record. The animals that were not on the Ark died from the worldwide and are fossils we find today in the fossil record. This record is only thousands of years old and not millions. Dinosaurs and other land animals were created on the six day of creation week along with man (Adam) and woman (Eve). All the sedimentary rock layers were laid down in one year. When the flood ended, the fossil record was done. It was sealed underground until erosion and man unearthed these awesome creatures for us to see.
