The 2016 NBA Playoffs will begin on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Here is a list of the current betting odds for each of the 16 playoff teams to go on and win the 2016 NBA Championship.
There is a huge favorite to win the 2016 NBA title but for the first time in NBA history we have two teams in the playoffs who both won at least 67 games. Winning 67 games is tied for the 7th most wins in a season in NBA history. Along with the odds for each team also listed are the number of wins each team had this season, how many titles each team already has won and how many of the teams fared against the best teams in the league in 2016.
Good luck to all the NBA teams and especially the bettors in the 2016 NBA playoffs!
1. Golden State Warriors – 1/2 odds
At 1/2 odds, the Golden State Warriors are prohibitive favorites to repeat as the NBA Champions in 2016. The Warriors won a NBA single-season record 73 games this season. The Chicago Bulls held the previous record at 72 wins in 1996 and that team went on to win the NBA Championship.
Of all the 12 teams who won at least 67 games in a season, only the 1973 Boston Celtics (68 wins) and the 2007 Dallas Mavericks (67 wins) failed to win the NBA Championship. However, though, the 2016 San Antonio Spurs won 67 games this season and they are clearly a threat to the Warriors. One of the two teams with 67 plus wins this season will not will the NBA Championship this season. The Warriors franchise has won four NBA titles.
2. San Antonio Spurs – 19/5
As noted above, the Spurs won 67 games in 2016 and eight of the previous 10 teams that won at least 67 games in a season went on to win the NBA Championship. The Spurs did hand the Warriors one of their nine losses this season but went 1-3 overall vs Golden State. The Spurs have won five NBA titles which is fourth best all-time and their last win was in 2014.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers – 4 to 1
The Cleveland Cavaliers are the prohibitive 5/13 odds favorite to win the Eastern Conference and they are 4 to 1 to win the 2016 NBA Championship. Without Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving last year, LeBron James did single-handily take the Golden State Warriors to a sixth game.
It’s certainly not impossible at all that the Cavaliers could win the 2016 NBA Title. The Cavs won 57 games this season but the team has yet to win a NBA Championship.
4. Oklahoma City Thunder – 15 to 1
The Oklahoma City Thunder won 55 games in 2016 but did not beat the Golden State Warriors in three tries. The Thunder did beat the Spurs a couple of times this season. When you have Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant on your team you are a threat to beat anybody. This franchise won a NBA Championship in 1979 while in Seattle.
5. Los Angeles Clippers – 40 to 1
The Clippers won 53 games in the 2016 NBA season but the team failed to beat the Warriors in three tries and had losing records vs both the Spurs and Thunder. Chris Paul would have to play out-of-his mind for the Clippers to win the title this season. The Clippers have yet to win a title.
6. Toronto Raptors – 50 to 1
The Toronto Raptors won 56 games this season which is just one behind what the Cavaliers did. Like the Cavaliers the Raptors are battling history as the franchise has yet to win a NBA Championship.
7. Miami Heat – 75 to 1
The Miami Heat won 48 games this season which is tied for third best in the East. The Heat did beat the Cavaliers twice during the season but the playoffs will be a different game. Miami has three NBA titles with their last win in 2013.
8. Boston Celtics – 80 to 1
The Boston Celtics also won 48 games this season and one of their wins was over the Golden State Warriors by a score of 109-106 on the road on April 1, 2016. Was that just an April Fool’s joke or can the Celtics win a title this season? The Celtics have already won 17 titles with their last win in 2008.
9. Atlanta Hawks – 100 to 1
The Atlanta Hawks also won 48 games during the 2016 NBA season. But the Hawks failed to beat LeBron James and the Cavs this season which does not bode well for their playoff chances. This franchise won a NBA title in 1958 while in St. Louis.
10. Charlotte Hornets – 125 to 1
Charlotte is the fourth Eastern Conference team to win 48 games in 2016 but the Hornets are getting no respect in the betting odds. The team did beat Cleveland this season but beating them four times is asking a lot in the playoffs. Charlotte is going for its first NBA title.
11. Portland Trail Blazers – 150 to 1
The Portland Trail Blazers won 44 games this season including a huge 137-105 win over Golden State in February. The Trail Blazers won their only NBA Championship in 1977 behind Bill Walton.
12. Indiana Pacers – 200 to 1
The Indiana Pacers won 45 games in the regular season but the team is way too offensively challenged to win a title in 2016. The Pacers made the NBA Finals in 2000 but lost and have yet to win a title.
T-13. Houston Rockets – 250 to 1
The Houston Rockets went just 41-41 in 2016 and won the fewest games of any playoff team but the team has lower odds than three other teams here. That’s because of James Harden who is the only real hope for the Rockets to win a title. The Rockets have two NBA titles which they won in back-to-back years in 1994 and 1995 when Michael Jordan retired for the first time.
T-13. Detroit Pistons – 250 to 1
The Detroit Pistons won 44 games in 2016 and were the last East team to make the playoffs. For whatever it’s worth the Pistons did beat the Cavaliers in OT in the last game of the season and they did beat Golden State back in January. The Pistons have won three titles with the last in 2004.
15. Dallas Mavericks – 500 to 1
The Dallas Mavericks won 42 games this season. The Mavs did beat Golden State in January but the did not beat Oklahoma Cioty this season ans that’s who they play in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Mavs won their only title in 2011.
16. Memphis Grizzlies – 1,000 to 1
The Grizzlies also won 42 games this season but at 1,000 to 1 odds you could say the odds makers are giving them zero chance to win the 2016 NBA Championship. The Grizzlies have yet to win a NBA Championship.
