You might have plans for a romantic night out with your partner for Valentine’s Day, but what about the kids? If you’d like to take part in a few events in honor of the holiday with your children, then keep reading. The Chicago area has a number of themed events for families, including arts and crafts, learning about animals and even a cooking class. Take a look at these family-friendly events in Chicago and the suburbs for the weekend of February 12-14, 2016.
Lincoln Park Zoo
Having a roaring good time when you register the family for the Valentine’s Day-themed Animal Enrichment Workshop at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. The workshop, held February 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., includes making crafts for the zoo’s animals. Details on registration are on the zoo’s website.
Chicago Park District
Dance the night away with the numerous Valentine’s Day-themed dances through the Chicago Park District. Upcoming events include the Family Valentine Day Dance at Maggie Dale Park on February 5, a Tots Valentine Day Party at Skinner Park on February 11, and a Winnie The Pooh Valentine’s Day event at Olympia Park on February 12. Chicago Public Library
You and your child can make cards and crafts in honor of Valentine’s Day at select branches of the Chicago Public Library. On February 13, there’s the Valentine’s Day Stories and Craft at the Canaryville location and a Valentine’s Day Craft-A-Thon at Archer Heights. The Kids’ Table
Get cooking with your child when you attend the Valentine’s Day family holiday workshop through the cooking school The Kids’ Table. Families will learn how to make special cookies and strawberry milk in honor of the holiday. Classes will be held February 12 at the organization’s location in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, and February 13 at the Lakeview location. Make crafts, hear a story and more through the “Love Bugs” celebration at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. The event, held February 12 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., is geared for children ages three to five years old. The fee is $10 per child; check out Cantigny Park’s website for more details.
Forest Preserves of Cook County
Through the program “Animal Attraction,” you and your family can learn how animals choose their mates. The free program takes place February 14 at 1 p.m. at Forest Preserves of Cook County’s Crabtree Nature Center in the suburb of Barrington Hills.
Lake County Forest Preserves
Celebrate all things Elizabethan when you visit the Elizabethan Faire at Lake County Forest Preserves’ Lake County Discovery Museum. The event, which will be held February 14 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., includes live musical performances.
Learn about the animals who love the cold through Brookfield Zoo’s FREEze Day on February 14. The event, which includes free admission, will include a dog sled demonstration and even an opportunity for your child to make cards for animals in honor of the holiday.
