It is estimated that North America’s cosmetic industry will exceed 62 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. Although this means a bigger selection of products, the challenge for most of us is learning how to make every beauty dollar count. To sift through cookie cutter beauty advice and mountains of products to find the best candidates under $20, I sat down with insider and professional makeup artist, Tracey Kaste.
Follow along as Ms. Kaste shares her fresh tips, ideas and 12 of the best beauty products under $20 for spring.
Q: What are the top spring products for the ladies who want a polished look and have a busy schedule?
Kaste: I have four products to share and the first one focuses on healthy skin. We all know having good skin is an important part of achieving the polished look – weather you are in a boardroom, at a school play, or modeling on the runway. But how do you get it? Start by removing your make up before falling asleep each night. Too tired after a full day to do a proper washing? Try Yes Cucumber facial wipes, they take off makeup without irritation and you can keep them bed side for a quick washing ($3 – $6 at Target and leading drugstores). Product number two is a favorite for the lips. When the perfect Jennifer Lopez pout is needed, I use Liplift Max by Pixie. It’s a popular treatment that plumps, and moisturizes, while healing with a minty flavor. It also has a glossy finish that will leave you feeling pretty, even on a challenging day ($14 at pixibeauty.com or Amazon).
Next and to cover up signs of long days in the office or dark circles from spring allergies, Jourdana Complete Cover 2 in 1 Concealer and Foundation is a new solution. It’s available in 12 shades that even out complexions with buildable coverage and has a fantastic price point ($5 on Amazon). Also, if you had to skip the manicure in order to prepare for a big meeting, invest in this fourth pick: Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure nail polish. It wears beautifully and has a gel finish that is available in more than 40 shades ($7 at Target and drugstores nationwide).
Q: Which beauty products can deliver the right color and glowing skin for spring 2016?
Kaste: Good question and I have two suggestions for color along with two products that will leave you luminous. My fifth pick is Hard Candy Cheeky Tints and they will add a burst of color in a light weight formula for a sheer wash of natural color ($6 at Walmart this spring and hardcandy.com). Number six is the lipstick duo by Bite Beauty. In addition to the classic pinks they have a new spring duo in Tangerine and Lingonberry that will brighten up your days ($19 at Amazon). For the eyes, my seventh selection is Nonie Cream Color Prevails Eye Shimmer Powder, created by the former creative director of Butter London. These eye shadows add simmer with long wear and adhere like magic ($10 at Walgreens). The “Eye Palette Social Butterfly” is new, portable, and has skin conditioning ingredients to help eyes look smooth and youthful ($19 at Walgreens). The eighth pick is Pixie Glow Mist to hydrate your skin. This luminous mist sets makeup, adds glow, and protects skin ($15 at Target and Amazon).
Q: Can you recommend any budget friendly anti-aging products?
Kaste: An important question. Your best anti-ager (aside from BBL/Broad Light treatments ~ $400 each) is sunscreen! Broad spectrum UVA and UBV. At number nine on the list, a great drug store find is Neutrogena’s Age Shield. Apply after your moisturizer to save your face from premature aging. For best results reapply every 2 hours ($14 Ulta and drugstores nationwide). If you are on the go, a great touch up is Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear SPF Powder Foundation, which rounds out the top ten. This popular foundation provides SPF 50 protection while delivering a natural looking finish without looking heavy ($12 at Amazon and Physicians Formula.com).
Q: When you did the makeup for New York Fashion Week, what have been a few of your favorite tools?
Kaste: Beautyblender, at number 11, it’s one of my favorite tools and has stood the test of time. I like the egg shaped cosmetic sponge that (once damp) delivers a flawless finish when I apply concealers, makeup, and liquid blushes ($20 at Sephora and beautyblender.com). Completing the list of 12 under $20 is Tweezerman’s No Mess Mascara Wand. This is a handy tool to keep mascara where you want it, also great for bottom lashes ($10 at Tweezerman.com). On the go without any tools? Use a business card to apply mascara and avoid smudges. Carefully place the card over your eyelid and gently lift your eyelid up. Holding the card in this position, apply your mascara as usual. This is also a great technique for your lower lashes.
