The Academy Awards red carpet always offers one of the best fashion shows in showbiz, and this year’s awards were no exception. Many stars brought their A game to the red carpet, taking risks and showcasing looks that were a refreshing break from the norm. Much of the attention may be given to the nominees, but this year’s presenters and plus ones looked just as stunning as the candidates for Oscar gold. Here are the best of the best.
This year’s front runner for Best Lead Actress stunned in a royal blue Gucci gown with a plunging neckline and pleated bottom. Its crimped ruffles accentuated a short train, bringing an updated yet classic glamour. Larson kept the hair and accessories simple, which helped to showcase the dress.
Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Danish Girl,” Alicia Vikander opted for a custom hi-low Louis Vuitton gown. Its pale yellow hue popped on the carpet and was accentuated with beaded detailing. Vikander chose to wear her hair in a half-up bun, which is a break from traditional chignons and updos.
The “Quantico” star stunned in a body hugging, lace Zuhair Murad gown. With feminine and sexy details and stylish accents, the dress, which could read very plain in a sea of color, stood out. Chopra also opted for minimal jewelry, sticking with drop earrings and a few rings, letting the dress stand on its own.
Presenter and “X-Men: Apocalypse” star Olivia Munn brought it in an Orange Stella McCartney gown. Its solo cape shoulder is interesting and elegant adding drama to an otherwise muted look. She took a beauty risk matching the lip color to the dress, but succeeded in creating a pulled together look.
Nominated for Best Lead Actress for her role in “Brooklyn,” Saoirse Ronan payed homage to her home country of Ireland with this emerald green Calvin Klein gown. Its simplistic silhouette offers the perfect backdrop for intricate beading. Ronan carried the green theme throughout the look with her jewelry.
While it’s not unheard of to see a little leg on Oscar’s red carpet, it is rare to see leather, so Kerry Washington’s Atelier Versace dress is a break from the norm. However, the look fits her edgy, yet sophisticated style. The hard look is a stark contrast to flowy gowns that are so common at the Academy Awards, and Washington pulls it off.
Actress Naomi Watts stunned in a strapless, jewel-toned Armani gown, complete with scale detailing on the skirt. The ombre effect on the top transitions beautifully into a scale pattern on the bottom that draws the eye through the entire look. Watts opted to go with a show stopping necklace to complete the look, but she kept her hair simple.
