Wednesday night’s Discovery Channel episode of “Bering Sea Gold,” was titled “Digging Deep.” This is a prequel to the upcoming season that fans wait for as soon as “Gold Rush” ends. It all began with three lucky Swedes who began the Alaskan gold rush back over a century in the past who arrived in a rowboat and found gold. Now the modern-day gold hunters are just as excited as those 10,000 hunters who came seeking their fortune so long ago.
The father and son team of Steve and Shawn Pomrenke who have a tumultuous relationship are the first family of the miners who have been there for years. Shawn is nicknamed Mr. Gold and wears that moniker well. For years, they have been looking for gold on a dredge with a backhoe on a rig called the “Christine Rose.”
Zeke Tenhoff has been a miner since he left college. He and Emily Reidel have had an on and off relationship since the first season. Emily has had struggles with diving and has her own dredge called the Eroica.
Vern Adkison is another dredger that runs the Wild Ranger and knows that the original miners were not interested in fine gold, but only nuggets. Vern knows that his fortune is in the making. He has six boats in the water and spends his fortune trying to make it bigger. He has butted heads with some of the maddest and craziest miners in the business. Scott Meisterheim had probably the thickest head in the state, and after a few seasons, went on his merry way.
The Kelly Boys, combine fighting, thievery and crazy in the father and two sons family of dredgers. Father Brad would risk his sons’ lives to save a dime by buying cheap parts for the dredge. Brad robbed his sons blind while they were working for him. Finally, Kris got his own dredge and left his father behind.
Steve Pomrenke wanted to cut his son out of the inland mining operation while Shawn was supporting his father’s aspiring inland trek. Once the two came to terms, Shawn was back in and Derek was no longer Steve’s partner.
Zeke and Emily continued to have a rocky relationship, but Emily’s diving became questionable, Zeke brought in his friend John Bunce. John had his own demons, and alcohol was number one. Finally, John took his own life, and this act left its mark on both Zeke and Emily. When Zeke gathered a team of experienced miners, Emily was cut out of the team. After purchasing her own dredge, she had her share of problems. Being a woman was her biggest challenge.
Vern Adkison introduced his submersible dredge last season, but it had several bugs. This season, he hopes all bugs are gone and the dredge will be taking the place of humans.
When the Pomrenke guys begin this season, their inland operation hopes to strike it rich. The Kelly boys will be operating the Paddy Wagon and the Reaper, but who will be working with who is questionable.
In 2016, Emily and Zeke will be mining for gold, but will it be separately or together? Tune in on Wednesday for the first episode of the upcoming season that will surely be filled with fights, broken equipment, unhappy owners and divers and lots of gold on the new season of “Bering Sea Gold.”
