When you complete your secondary school education, the world hands you a blank sheet of paper. This blank sheet represents you and the career path you want to choose. Most of you do not have a clue where to start. The trick to choosing a great career is to research on its benefits and its disadvantages. Basically, a little bit of research goes a long way.
When you are choosing a career, you must first and foremost ask yourself if it fits your personality. Keep in mind that you will be doing it for most of your life, long hours will be spent at the office and most of your energy per day will be spent at it. It therefore should be something you enjoy and love doing.
My journey in sales and marketing started when I answered a classified in the newspaper. It talked of a sales opportunity at a mall in town in a mattress firm. In fact, one of the largest mattress firms in the country. Thirty years down the line and I am recruiting my replacement.
Having had a very successful sales career in the mattress sector; the benefits in this field are unending. They include;
1. A sales career offers Flexibility.
People in the field of sales and marketing have a lot of flexibility. Flexibility in terms of: how to do your job, when to do your job and where to do it from. The main objective of a sales person is to sell; therefore you are not limited to how you intend to achieve this goal. Most employers offer free reign to their sales employees as long as they produce the desired results.
A sales person can work from anywhere in the country as long as they get to achieve their goal. Most sales companies offer a travel allowance to their employees to facilitate for these travels. In fact the further you travel, the better as this acts as a way to market the products you have in tow. At the mattress company that I worked for example, we would travel in a branded company van thereby marketing the products as we travel.
A sales person can choose the hours in which he or she works, if you choose this as a career path as long as you meet desired targets and maintain a good rapport with the management, you will be allowed free reign in choosing your most productive hours.
2. A sales career encourages you to be yourself
While other careers encourage uniformity and following protocol, a career in sales encourages the opposite, uniqueness. Most sales persons develop a career through their own personality. It is important to have a great sales personality as this will be your success.
Human beings desire to have human connections, even with the person they are buying a product or service from. Acting like a manufactured product of a sales brochure never works out. Being yourself and embracing your individuality mostly gets you the best results.
When starting out at the mattress company I worked for, I decided right off the bat that I would be myself. While selling different types of mattresses, I would fling myself on the display beds and urge my potential client to do the same in order to test how comfortable it was. I sold several memory foam mattresses using this method.
3. A sales career has unmatched job security
There is nothing as invaluable as a sales employee that meets targets, surpasses them and earns the company a reasonable amount of income. In this career, your main objective will be to meet the standard set out targets of the company. This is the bare minimum that you should bring in as an individual at the end of every month.
Most good sales people set out their own personal targets. Although they usually have one made for them, it is important to strive to be better than who you were the previous month. This way, you prove to be an asset to the company and your job security will be without question.
4. A Sales career offers an opportunity to learn
A sales career is one of the widest careers you will come across in the field. It opens you up to meet new people every day and also teaches you about different products and services.
During my career in the field of mattresses, I developed a curiosity about the products I was selling. I learned for example that couples usually have a hard time choosing the right mattress to suit both partners. I learned that the best type of mattress for couples was one that provides for motion isolation, high density foam and has pocket coil innersprings. By learning this much, I would target couples looking for that perfect fit and my skills were unmatched in having the highest sales.
5. A sales career is always in demand
Every company requires and seeks after the best in the business. Every company has a sales and marketing department, so as a career you as an individual will always be in demand. The beauty of the sales career is that, it enhances the status of an individual rather than a company.
When you achieve great results in sales you not only get great results, but youalso achieve more in terms of personal growth. As you sell your products and services, you also sell and market yourself as a great asset to any company. A lot of poaching takes place in this field, so you must be careful and not let the temptation of job hoping get to you. The trick is to bloom where you are planted, then let them seek you out.
6. A sales career has no income ceiling
The more you sell the more you earn. There is no income ceiling in this career; it is purely based on your performance. A great sales person keeps this in mind every single day; your work is based on your own individual effort.
In most careers regardless of whether or not you are successful, you get a standard monthly income. Most players in the sales sector know that a daily motivation to your employees is the prospect of unlimited income. This builds in a person, drive and ambition.
A career in sales is a lucrative one and I urge anyone with the right fit and personality to jump at it. It is rewarding and one can never go wrong with personal effort. I also urge everyone to apply for this opportunity available, I have built my life on it and I will assure you, it is very rewarding.
