First things first. The two main events in the Bellator 149 event taking place in Toyota Center this Friday have all the train wreck qualities you can ever ask for.
The co-main event features a fight between two Miami-Dade County YouTube street fighters, Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (5-2) and Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris. This fight will have nothing to do with skill or discipline. It will live up to its billing with two street fighters doing what they do best. Slice should be able to take control early and win easily if he doesn’t run out of gas. Dada 5000s one punch knockout power is his only hope in this contest.
Dada 5000 wasn’t at a loss for words at the pre-fight press conference:
You’re going to understand what it feels like to be helpless for the first time in a long time in your life. At the end of the day, you ain’t never met someone who’s going to hit you as hard as me.
Not to be upstaged, Slice had a few choice words of his own:
You fool! Shut up, man. You ain’t got [expletive] to say. You looked like [expletive] in your training yesterday. Ain’t nothing you can do can hurt me.
The Main event will feature two long time AARP members going to battle for the third and hopefully final time. A 49 year old Royce Gracie (14-2-3), and a 52 year old Ken Shamrock (28-16-2), have decided to settle the score in their rivalry with one final rubber match before they get too old. Wait, they already…..nevermind. The only positive aspect of this matchup is that fans get an opportunity to witness two legends go at it again strictly for nostalgic purposes. Will they be able to perform on the level they once did 22 years ago when they fought for the first time? Absolutely not, but it should be interesting to see what kind of skills they can pull out of the bag.
Gracie and Shamrock will always hold a special place in the hearts of fight fans. No one will forget Gracie pulling off a miracle by submitting a man twice his size in Dan Severn after being pinned on his back for over 30 minutes. No one will forget the shear dominance and Tyson like intimidation that Shamrock possessed in his prime. In order to keep this unfortunate meeting in perspective, that’s what I’ll always remember them for.
Unfortunately the combatants who are receiving top billing have taken the shine away from some pretty solid fighters who probably deserve to be recognized more. A lineup that features names like Daniel Pineda, Melvin Guillard, Emmanuel Newton, Justin Wren, and Mike Trinh should provide plenty of excitement for the hardcore MMA audience that are not watching only because of the freakshow aspect.
Bellator 149 will take place tonight at the Toyota Center here in Houston and will be broadcast live on Spike TV.
