The Amador Vintners Association once again celebrates the splendors of the region’s wines with the annual Behind the Cellar Door event on March 5 and 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This 2016 wine tasting event will feature a delightful assortment of barberas, syrahs, old-vine zinfandels, sangioveses, viogniers and other unique palate pleasers of the Rhone, Mediterranean varieties as well as the classic ‘California Style’ wines that “flourish in Amador’s rich mountain terrain and sun-bathed hillside vineyards.”
With a focus on wine education and perfect pairings, the annual event features blending classes, vertical tastings, library samples and barrel offerings demonstrating a hand-crafted commitment to winemaking from vineyard to barrel to bottle at 43 Amador County wineries, along with focus on appreciating the styles of Rhone and Mediterranean grape types with a California flare. Large format tastings, demonstrations, entertainment, gourmet foods on Saturday and Sunday fill out the weekend’s festivities.
Kicking off the annual weekend is the Wine Maker Reception on Friday March 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm. where award winning winemakers will share their prized wines matched with exquisite food pairings created by the star culinary students of American River College. Pairings will ‘cover the globe’ from Spain, Italy and France and include ports, dessert wines, gourmet cheeses, desserts and beautiful chamber music performed by the music students of American River College.
Melissa Lavin, Executive Director of the Amador Vintners Association, states that “Amador is a hidden gem of mountainous terrain producing rich, classic wine varietals native of southern France, Italy and the Mediterranean with vineyards dating back to 1850’s. Our winemakers adore crafting and sharing world-class wines bringing old-world and new world together with great hospitality, which is what our award winning winemakers are known for. The adventurous wine lover and the novice alike are right at home tasting full-flavored food-friendly wines. Amador Wine Country is the ideal destination in the Sierra Foothills and our ‘Behind the Cellar Door’ event the perfect sneak-peak behind the scenes with our winemakers.”
