Pro triathlete Becky Lavelle was preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Then tragedy struck hard… On Dec. 19th, 2007, Becky’s twin sister, Jenny, purchased a gun at a sporting goods and later that day took her infant son Graham’s life and then her own.
Becky was devastated but decided to honor her sister’s memory by getting selected as a first alternate and going with the team to Beijing. “My sister was my biggest fan and my biggest supporter.” Becky and her family make sure that Jenny’s light still shines by starting Jenny’s Light to improve and save lives by increasing awareness of all perinatal mood disorders including postpartum depression.
This Sunday May 1, there will be a 5k; a 10k and 1k kids run to benefit Jenny’s Light. Online registration is open until 10 am Saturday April 30. Otherwise, pre-race bib pick-up is from 1-3pm on Sat April 30 at Sports Basement (1875 S Bascom Ave #240, Campbell, CA 95008). You can also get your bib at the race site from 8-9:30am on Sunday May 1st.
According to Becky, this race is in its eighth year and “Each year we raise ten to twenty thousand dollars.”
This cause is great and the need is greater. If you are unable to race, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to keep Jenny’s Light shining.
Next up: Becky describes “T3”, her transition from professional triathlete to full-time Mom. Stay tuned for a special Mother’s Day edition…
