Ever since I was a kid, I loved video games. I vividly remember playing Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda on my original Nintendo. Gaming has come a long way since then. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to review the new Nintendo 3DS XL along with some new games.
Nintendo 3DS XL has lots of exciting new features like faster processing power, which means less time waiting for games to load and more time to play. Second, it has a face-tracking 3D that adjusts the images according to your viewing angle allowing for a greater 3D experience. You can also choose to turn off the 3D feature if you like. Third, a new “C” stick for enhanced control on compatible games as well as new ZL and ZR buttons. Fourth, a built in amiibo™ gear and NFC (near-field communication) support for your amiibo figures on the lower screen to enjoy amiibo features in compatible games. You could score bonus items and content when you use amiibo figures. Fifth, it has an improved camera for better shots in low light situations and a better internet browser that allows you to zoom in with the “C” stick and switch tabs using the ZL and ZR buttons. Finally, Nintendo 3DS also allows you to play all your 3DS games and Nintendo DS and DSi games so you can enjoy your existing collection and add new future titles exclusively playable on the New Nintendo 3DS XL. What I like best about Nintendo 3DS is that it’s portable and kid-friendly. My daughter can take it upstairs to her room, she can play with it when we’re going for a car ride, she can take it when we visit relatives and even to a restaurant to keep her busy. Just a note when it comes to the charger. It is not included with the Nintendo 3DS. You can purchase the AC Adapter for $9.99 at www.nintendo.com.
In addition to the Nintendo 3DS, we also received two new role-playing games Mario & Luigi Paper Jam and Yo-Kai Watch, which kids and adults will love playing. I grew up playing Mario & Luigi on the original Nintendo, obviously gaming has come a long way since then, so I was very eager to start playing right away. In this new game, which was released in January 2016, Mario and Luigi are back and joined by a new Paper Mario who jumps out of a book along with all of Mario’s friends and foes including the Princess Peach, Toad, and Bowser when Luigi accidentally knocks over a book hidden away in Princess Peach’s castle that opens up another dimension. The superstar trio of Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario solve puzzles and embark on quests to save both universes. Lots of battles are had on Mario and Luigi’s quest to rescue Princess Peach when Paper Bowser and Regular Bowser kidnap her. Paper Mario is able to copy himself and the attack from him is a powerful weapon in battles. Be sure to take advantage of Paper Mario’s other unique skills such as slipping through cracks and folding himself up. The graphics are stunning and the storyline and humor make this a great game full of nostalgia sure to appease both new and older players alike.
My wife (who says she hates video games) finally put down Yo-Kai Watch long enough so I can have a turn and play and I have to say it’s a lot of fun. Yo-Kai Watch is an extremely popular Japanese anime, which came to the United States in 2015 with episodes airing on Disney XD. It’s about a boy named Nate who gains the ability to communicate with Yo-Kai, mischievous monster like beings that cause life’s daily annoyances. The game for Nintendo 3DS was released in November and I just saw a ton of toys at Toy Fair coming out later this year. The story starts out with Nate (you can also choose a female character) meeting a Yo-Kai named who basically follows him around like a sidekick. Nate receives a special watch that lets him see Yo-Kai because they cannot be seen by the human eye, but they are everywhere. You can befriend them and turn them into a team to battle other Yo-Kai , however befriending new Yo-Kai may not be so easy. In many cases, you will need to battle with them and impress them during your battle. Each Yo-Kai has its own unique skills and strengths and you’ll use them to challenge the evil Yo-Kai and help people in need of solving daily problems like friends having an argument, parents fighting with each other. Mischievous Yo-Kai are hidden everywhere and they might just have something to do with people arguing. It’s your job to use your watch, find them and stop them. You have to find at least 6 Yo-Kai to befriend to create your team in order to battle big, bad bosses. With the power of the Yo-Kai watch, you have the opportunity to befriend more than 200 hidden Yo-Kai, found everywhere in the world, and call upon their powers when you need their help.
The interaction is great in this game! The user has to interact with his Yo-Kai on the touchscreen by tapping, drawing, and tracing with the included stylus pen while the Yo-Kai automatically attack. Also, the Yo-Kai can speak in this game and it’s interesting to see all their unique personalities come through. If you don’t feel like battling you can do some other side quests by helping local townspeople with favors and requests. Once completed you can score items, money and/or points. After playing Yo-Kai Watch, I now know why my wife couldn’t put it down. This game is fun and seriously addicting.
I love the fact that Nintendo 3DS is so lightweight, easy to carry around and last but certainly not least a blast to play!! I’m in the Northeast so it’s been cold and on days like that; having a Nintendo 3DS with awesome games really beats cabin fever blues. Nintendo 3DS retails for $199.99 and both games retail for $39.99 each at www.nintendo.com.
