Steve Baran became the fourth different bowler to emerge victorious in Week 4 of the ongoing 11-week string of Champions Series scratch sweepers at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes on Tuesday (Feb. 23).
Baran opened the championship game with a spare followed by five consecutive strikes in rolling to a 234-208 triumph over John Thompson, and he joined Mike Thompson, James McCleland and Mike Clark, who posted respective wins in Weeks 1 through 3.
With games of 276, 222 and 208, Scott Kaplan’s 706 series was best in the three-game qualifying session. Thompson was runner-up with a 703 series on scores of 231, 255 and 217, while Baran also advanced with a 690 on games of 215, 236 and 239.
After the cut to those bowlers heading into a three-player elimination match, Baran posted the top score of 210, with Thompson also advancing with 200, while Kaplan was eliminated after a 161 game. Both Baran and Thompson had a double and turkey, but Thompson suffered two open frames while Baran had just one.
“The scores were well above the norm for the 40-foot Abbey Road (lane-conditioning) pattern,” said tournament director Chuck Souzer, who indicates that the same pattern will be used when the fifth event in the series is held on Tuesday (March 1).
The Champions Series is being conducted on the same format as the recent King Of Gulf Gate series, which finished an 11-week run last month, and entry fee each Tuesday is $20. Sign-up and registration begin at 6:15 p.m., with practice starting at 6:50 p.m. First place pays a guaranteed minimum of $75, based on only 10 entries.
The format calls for three qualifying games on a modified house pattern, after which there will be a 1-in-5 cut, and the survivors roll one game for the title (or force a cut to the top two for a final title-game showdown).
The series will continue with a Week 11 finale, but to qualify for the final week, a bowler must enter at least six of the weekly sweepers. There is $2 set aside each week to be added to the Week 11 prize fund. Brackets are available, and for additional information, call Gary Gooch at 921-4447.
