Men in Washington, DC have a lot more options lately when it comes to finding places to shop. There are a variety of new menswear stores that have popped up right in the city. It’s especially great when newer stores are celebrating milestones. This was the case on Tuesday, April 12 when not so newcomer now, Avenue Jack, celebrated its first year in business.
The DC menswear boutique hosted a celebration to thank its loyal patrons for a successful first year. And Avenue Jack has a lot to celebrate. Not only did it have a great first year but the staff of the Washington City Paper awarded the store with the “Best New Men’s Apparel” for 2016.
Avenue Jack is located in northwest Washington on Connecticut Avenue just south of Dupont Circle. The store carries a mixture of casual wear much in line with the tastes of Scott Wallis, the store’s Creative Director. byteclay.com spoke with him as he had a chance to reflect on the store’s first year.
How would you describe Avenue Jack’s product mix?
We’re still decidedly casual; there are scores of shops selling dress shirts and blazers. Avenue Jack is taking care of weekends, casual Fridays, and downtime with great loungewear options.
What are your thoughts on Avenue Jack’s first year?
“We’ve learned so much since opening the store last April. Based on our customers, we’ve tweaked our product mix and we seem to be meeting their demands. We continue to test new stuff and we’re pleasantly surprised that we get it right more than we get it wrong.”
What surprised you about the store?
“We never anticipated that 50% of our customers would be girls, so we’ve ramped up the gift options. From make your own hot sauce kits, to our signature railroad spike bottle opener, to our DC map barware, we’ve got almost any guy covered.”
What’s something new that guys can look out for the spring?
“We just introduced Herschel Supply Company bags and wallets and they’re already a big hit.”
While Tuesday night’s event was a celebratory party to thank Avenue Jack’s supporters during its first year, guests also took the opportunity to snap up some of the store’s most recent menswear offerings. For its part, Avenue Jack thanked guests with bites from Chef Patrick Vanas, specialty drinks courtesy of Lyon Distilling Co. of Saint Michaels, Maryland, door prizes and a generous gift bag courtesy of many of Avenue Jack’s favorite brands.
