Autre Monde is a beautiful little restaurant in the heart of Berwyn. There was plenty of street parking when I visited the restaurant.
The decorations are minimalistic with a few vintage movie posters on the walls. This is a cozy/intimate restaurant perfect for date-night.
Autre Monde’s menu leans towards a Mediterranean cuisine with a wine list to match. However, the purpose of my visit was not to review their menu or wine list. Instead, I was invited to attend their Cocktail Mixology Class.
Autre Monde has been offering these types of interactive mixology classes for the past couple of years. Classes are held every 6 weeks or so. Typical class size is anywhere from 10 to 15 people and last around 2 ½ hours.
The class was given by Becci Visconti West. She was informative, extremely talented, and was full of great ideas. I would definitely label her a subject-matter-expert. Autre Monde serves a terrific light lunch for each ‘student’. Our class was treated to a kale salad, patatos bravas, and roasted squash flatbread. A small sampling of these told me that dinner at this restaurant would be flavorful.
In short, for $50/person, our class received lunch and an in-depth understanding of how to make the perfect drinks for the holidays and wintery months.
The first thing that Becci stressed in the class was creativity and experimentation. She kept reminding us that drink recipes are not in stone and alternatives/substitutes are allowed and encouraged. She took the time to not only tell us how to make the perfect drinks, but she also gave us great tips on how to batch large portions for parties.
One of the topics I found most interesting was her recommendations of the must-have products and tools every home bar tender should have in his/her collection.
Here is a short list of the drinks we learned how to make:
Mulled Wine… you can make it on the stovetop or in a crockpot (preferred). This is a drink that does not need expensive wine. Spices and fresh citrus will quickly make this a favorite drink.
Brandy Milk Punch… the perfect dessert drink that can be served warm or chilled.
Classic Toddy… hot water with bourbon or rum with lemon juice and honey. The perfect drink for a sore throat or to simply relax when it’s cold outside.
If you’re looking for something to do that is fun and educational, I highly recommend that you put a cocktail class on your list of things to try.
