As mentioned, Djokovic is defending men’s champ after besting Andy Murray in last year’s finals, while Serena Williams took down rival Maria Sharapova on the women’s side. All four of these players are back in the draw and looking to make it far into this year’s tournament. First round play begins Sunday night and runs through early morning on ESPN2 and Tennis Channel.
Among the big first round matchups for the women will be No. 6 Petra Kvitova taking on Kumkhum and Carla Suarez-Navarro taking on V Golubic. Serena Williams steps onto the court for her first round matchup against Italian player Camila Giorgi at 9 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday night, while No. 5 Maria Sharapova will take on Japan’s Nao Hibino at 3 a.m. ET early Monday. Men’s No. 1 Djokovic will open against Korea’s Hyeon Chung at 11 p.m. ET, while No. 3 Federer takes on Nikolz Basilashvili starting at 3 a.m. ET. In terms of odds to win this year, the two reigning champs are leading the way. Djokovic has betting odds of 8 to 13, with Serena Williams at 3 to 1 odds. Andy Murray has 6 to 1 odds and Victoria Azarenka has odds of 10 to 3. For opening round play, Serena has odds of -1200 to defeat underdog Giorgi (+650), while Djokovic is a whopping -10000 favorite to defeat Chung (+2500). Two other heavy favorites for the men in first round action are Tomas Berdych (-10000) over Yuki Bhambri (+2500) and Roger Federrer (-10000) over Basilishvili (+2500), according to Bovada’s online sports book odds.
