The Australian Open 2016 live stream online and TV coverage continues with Day 2 of the tournament in Melbourne as several late night matches will take place. Among them will be women’s No. 5 player Maria Sharapova stepping onto the court for a second round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus. Unfortunately for the 21-year-old underdog, she’s gone 0-2 this year in singles action so far, but will try to pull off the second-biggest upset on the women’s side after No. 8 Venus Williams has already fallen. The 2016 Australian Open live streaming and televised action is presented through ESPN on Tuesday night.
According to a Jan. 18 ESPN.com report, Sharapova scored a first round victory by defeating Nao Hibino, showing that she has returned to form after her previous leg injury. That nagging right leg issue kept her out of action until last September, and then a sore left forearm forced her out of Brisbane in mid-November. However, she easily took down Hibino 6-1, 6-3 on Monday, after telling the media her health was much better. After her win she told the press, “I haven’t played any matches in many weeks. This is just great to come out here and start my season at the Australian Open. I’m quite pleased with the way I played tonight.”
Next up is No. 105 Sasnovich for the second round on Tuesday. Looking ahead, if Sharapova continues to play as well as she did in the first round, she would potentially meet the women’s No. 1 player, Serena Williams, in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Sharapova has lost the last 17 times the two have met, which doesn’t bode well for her chances against the best overall women’s player. Sharapova played things down in terms of how the draw went for her saying, “I mean, you’re bound to face somebody good from the first round on. There’s a reason why these players are in the draw.”
Odds makers have Sharapova as a -2500 favorite on the moneyline while Sasnovich is a +1200 underdog. The total for over/under bettors is 2-1/2 sets with the over at +400 and the under at -650, indicating Sharapova could once again make quick work of an opponent. Sharapova was tied with Simona Halep as an 8 to 1 favorite to win the tournament several weeks ago, trailing only Serena (9 to 4) and Victoria Azarenka (5 to 1).
Tuesday night’s Maria Sharapova vs. Aliaksandra Sasnovich match has a scheduled start time of approximately 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Live television coverage is available on ESPN2 from the tournament as early as 3 p.m. ET. Viewers can watch live streaming online coverage on the WatchESPN/ESPN3 websites and mobile apps as of 7 p.m. ET from a variety of courts. For live audio commentary, Sirius XM Satellite Radio subscribers should listen on channel 145 throughout the event.
