Police have arrested a suspect in Ashley Olsen’s death, the American artist living in Italy. Olsen, who hailed from Summer Haven, Florida, before moving to Florence, Italy, was found dead by her boyfriend in her apartment last week.
According to CNN News on January 15, Olsen’s boyfriend asked the landlord to let him check on Ashley after he couldn’t get a hold of her. When the boyfriend and landlord entered the apartment they found Olsen in bed unresponsive. The boyfriend put Olsen’s lifeless body on the floor and administered CPR, but it was to no avail, as it appears she had been dead for a while.
Police say Ashley’s dog, who is very well trained, had defected a few times in the apartment, indicating he had not been taken out for a walk for some time. Italian police believe Olson had been strangled with something else rather than somebody’s bare hands, possibly a cord or rope of some kind.
Police probed through hours of surveillance camera videos taken from the nightclub where Ashley was last seen with friends, along with videos taken by cameras along the way home from that nightclub. They also watched video footage from the cameras around her apartment house.
The suspect was identified through the video footage. According to MSN News, the suspect has been identified as Tidiane Cheik Diaw. Overnight police arrested Diaw on charges of aggravated murder. The arrest came after the video footage evidence combined with DNA tests on Olsen’s body pointed to the suspect. Police also found evidence from around Olsen’s apartment that the suspect was there. The evidence indicated a strong link to Diaw as the suspect in the killing of Olsen.
There was “strong evidence of guilt” against Diaw, claimed the prosecutor in this case, Giuseppe Creazzo. This includes the DNA evidence taken from a cigarette butt along with the DNA on a condom found in the apartment.
The suspect is a Senegalese national, and MSN News reports that he was “allegedly found in possession of Olsen’s phone and had inserted his own sim card. He had entered Italy illegally a few months ago with the aim of joining his brother,” which is what the prosecutor conveyed to the media.
Video footage reveals that Ashley left the nightclub with the suspect and they went back to her apartment. Tests reveal that while Ashley had sex shortly before her death, she was not sexually assaulted. Police say because there was no sign of a break-in or scuffle in her apartment is was believed early on in the investigation that Ashley knew her killer. Ashley’s boyfriend was almost immediately ruled out as a suspect as his alibis checked out.
