It is rare that an author can capture the nostalgia and feeling of one generation in between the covers of a book. Ernest Cline has been successful at capturing this magic twice and in doing so, creating novels of scope, heart, action and depth. His novels have become favorites of old and young while encapsulating the essence of an era in a manner that one can almost relive the decade of over indulgence and fun. His latest endeavor, “Armada”, has been sweeping readers into a world of intrigue and fantasy for almost a year. The adventure is now available to bring home in paperback.
“Armada” is the adventure of a high school student named Zack. He is your normal high school gamer, with some behavioral problems that seem to manifest oddly one day when he starts noticing ships from his favorite game out of his classroom window. Afraid that he is officially losing his marbles just as he assumed his deceased father did, Zack tries to hide his hallucinations from his boss, his best friends and his mother. Was it a hallucination? What if his father had been right in his conspiracy theories that the Government was using Science Fiction films and video games to prepare us for something scary? All of his doubts and fears seem to become a fantastical nightmare as he realizes that his favorite game “Armada” may be real.
As with his first endeavor in “Ready Player One”, Ernest Cline masterfully composes an adventure grounded within the pop culture references that defined a generation. His ability to take decades of film, music and video game history and create an epic new tale full of page tuning suspense truly is a celebration that pulls in the reader and creates an intimacy of familiarity. This book even has its own playlist! It seems as though everything that Cline writes turns to gold and the magic of his writing ability will capture readers once again with “Armada”.
Cline’s first novel “Ready Player One” is currently being turned into a mainstream motion picture with Steven Spielberg at the helm. Scheduled to be released in 2018, Tye Sheridan and Simon Peg have been announced to be attached to the film. Fans cannot wait to see one of their favorite novels come to life.
The new paperback version of “Armada” is now available at local bookstores and through online retailers. In addition, Ernest Cline is embarking on a signing tour and will be appearing in Denver, CO at the Tattered Cover Bookstore on Colfax Avenue Thursday, April 14, 2016.
