Many years ago, when the news came to our doorsteps each morning in the form of a newspaper, there was an old adage abounding. One would say upon picking up the paper, “Let me see who shot John, and who hit who over the head with a hoe handle?”
The only thing that has changed from those now primitive days is the mass media outlets challenging each other for who can get out there first with the “breaking news” accurate or not.
On a busy news day, you will get a variety of news stories; but it seems that on some days, you get the same story over and over and it is like drinking the morning’s leftover cold coffee at noon.
It appears that 99% of all news is bad – with only a sprinkling of good here and there. And once there is a “big” story brewing, it is like the reporters have the tiger by the tail and just can’t let go. Anyone who watches the morning and evening news will be fed one awful, terrible story after the other and only a few drips and dabbles here and there about the good stuff going on in our land.
This week it seems that “gun control” is on the front burner again with President Obama threatening to use executive powers to run the show rather than to let the officials elected by the fifty states make the decisions and the laws… as is the precedent.
Is the problem really with guns? Or is it a huge problem of the wrong people having guns? And who is to decide who the wrong people are? And how do you keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, crazy, irresponsible criminals when they get their guns illegally?
What should be the litmus test for those who can own guns and who cannot own a gun? Many crimes have been committed by people holding stolen guns. Will stricter laws turn out like prohibition and drugs? Would it make them hard to get and would people flock to illegal gun runners?
There was a time when you had to be a landowner to vote. Should those who buy guns be registered voters? Should they have to own their home? Should they have to undergo a mental evaluation? Should they have three leading citizens sign affidavits that they are capable of being a gun owner? If not, what?
Guns are only tools; they do not plan, think, or act on their own. Man has used various tools since the Stone Age. An ax does not jump up and cut the wood, a hammer does not drive the nail, and guns do not shoot people. People shoot people.
As long as there are people who want to harm us, rob us, or kill us we must have the tools to protect ourselves and families. What is a man or woman to do when someone is forcing their way into a home to do harm – grab the egg beater? Without gun ownership, there would be anarchy and many more crimes committed against defenseless people.
Do away with the elements of crime and there would be no need for guns except to hunt and target shoot. If all these people who were shot by police had been at home or some other place being what God intended for them to be – NONE of them would have been shot and killed. What if schools would do more to protect our children rather than spending billions on fruitless things? What is one child’s life worth?
Every school room should be equipped with a thick 4 x 4 crossbar available to swing across the door to block it. Like fire drills, when the siren goes off teachers immediately send kids to the back of the room and swings the cross bar that will prevent entry. Just that simple.
What would that cost? A chunk of wood, a huge screw with washer and a large steel cradle hook bolted to the wall for the wood to rest in across the other side of the door. Measures for safety is much more effective than stopping one fool from owning a gun; for there will always be another because evil and depressed people are looking for a way to die and they want to go out in a blaze of glory.
Since we can’t change the evil hearts of some people, and until we can – we will need to have the freedom and the means to protect ourselves. Hitler took all the guns – he thought… but the underground and people found some and that helped to change the war as much as the big tanks.
We live in evil and trying times and that evil is the enemy; not guns. It is the intent of the shooter, not the guns that kill. They do not pop out of the closet, bedside table, or another hiding place, open the door, walk down the street, and start shooting at people. There has to be an evil intending person behind those tools.
Until President Obama or any president can assure us we can sleep in our homes without locks, run our businesses without fear, walk down the street safely, and allow our children to play outside without fear, we will continue to need guns as much as the air we breathe. You can follow the news on CNN and on FoxNews and other “news factories” to get the details of what President Obama proposes. FoxNews: Obama’s gun control opens legal can of worms. A wise man once said, “You can’t get rid of the webs until you get rid of the spider!” Interpretation: When prayer and Bible reading and the pledge to the flag and honor towards parents, teachers, and society were taught in schools – gun related crimes and murders were hardly ever heard of… leaving us to believe we need to go back to those teachings in the school and “get” the spider of evil and discontent away from the hearts of those who will suffer the most from having not been taught “right from wrong!” That would be the children and society.
