An Anti-Beyonce rally? A collective of Bey haters have scheduled a rally to be held outside the NFL’s headquarters in Manhattan next week to protest the 34-year-old singer and songwriter’s choice of costumes and choreography during the halftime show of Super Bowl 50. While Beyonce’s meaty legs were a rompin’ and a stompin’ last Sunday, some were appalled at the message behind the music – many are calling it “anti-police” and said Bey and her dancers glorified the Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter movements.
Writes Us Weekly on Feb. 10: “Clearly not a fan. Beyonce’s politically charged performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, February 7, sparked plenty of online chatter, and on Tuesday, February 16, some of the singer’s bigger critics will band together in an anti-Beyonce rally in New York City.”
While the “Formation” singer’s crisscrossed, gold sash outfit resembled Michael Jackson’s getup worn during his 1993 Super Bowl performance, her backup dancers sported afros, berets and dressed in an all-black style – resembling the far-left, black nationalist and socialist Black Panther party. The Black Panthers sought to arm citizens in order to monitor the behavior of police officers. The Panthers – once called by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover “the greatest threat to the internal security of the country” – was active in the United States from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
Adds Detroit CBS local: “At one point in the performance, the dancers raised their fists to the sky and made a formation on the field in the shape of an X that, according to [a police sergeant under investigation for comparing the performance to the KKK], was attributed to black activist Malcolm X.”
Protestors plan to rally outside of the NFL Headquarters in NYC on Feb. 16, the same day tickets for her Beyonce’s “Formation” world tour go on sale. An EventBrite protest page, which is calling on demonstrators to wear blue in support of police officers, says of their planned rally:
Are you offended as an American that Beyoncé pulled her race-baiting stunt at the Superbowl? Do you agree that it was a slap in the face to law enforcement? Do you agree that the Black Panthers was/is a hate group which should not be glorified? Come and let’s stand together. Let’s tell the NFL we don’t want hate speech & racism at the Superbowl ever again!
The halftime show was targeted by a number of critics, including former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who slammed the Super show, calling the stunt “outrageous” and condemning the NFL for allowing Beyonce to insert politics into the NFL’s biggest entertainment spectacle.
“This is football, not Hollywood, and I thought it was really outrageous that she used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive,” Giuliani said a day after the big game, according to Fox News.
“And what we should be doing in the African-American community, and all communities, is build up respect for police officers. And focus on the fact that when something does go wrong, OK, we’ll work on that. But the vast majority of police officers risk their lives to keep us safe,” Giuliani added.
In response to the anti-Beyonce call, another EventBrite page, supporting Black Lives Matter, has ramped up. “We have asked our biggest stars to get political and Bey went there,” the page reads. “Don’t let anyone make her powerful statement about the value of Black life be overshadowed by those who don’t believe that our lives matter.”
