Anthony Cumia, the former co-host of the “Opie and Anthony” radio show, was arrested for domestic violence after a 26-year-old unidentified girl took to the online site Periscope and made a document of her reaction to an alleged attack. She did all this before calling police to have him arrested.
According to MSN News on December 20, in the clip she made on Periscope she is seen “Periscoping the inside” of Cumia’s house making the video and she is screaming at him that he broke her hand. Cumia refers to the girl as Dani while she is using Periscope to document the surroundings.
Cumia is seen on the video with a beer in his hand taking her actions lightly and laughing. As she’s intent on getting this all on the video Cumia chuckles and asks, “You want to sing karaoke?” He appears to be getting a kick out of her actions.
She says on the video that she couldn’t call the police because Cumia “turned the phone off.” He is heard asking her if he could call her a car and she said, “I don’t need you to pay for a car. I need you to pay for my (expletive)ing broken hand you dumb piece of (expletive).”
The girl known only as Dani appeared to be very intent on catching this all on camera. At one point she starts to yell in full view of the camera, “you shouldn’t have lied, you shouldn’t have hit me, you shouldn’t have treated me like [expletive] and I wouldn’t be Periscoping this.”
CBS News reports that when police arrived at Cumia’s home Saturday morning, the shock jock was strangling the 26-year-old victim. The relationship of this girl to the radio personality is unknown, but some news channels are reporting that she is is girlfriend. A police spokesperson would only say: That Cumia “got into an argument with an individual that stemmed into this physical violence. That’s as far as we’re going to discuss this at this time.”
Cumia entered a not-guilty plea on Sunday morning and was released without bail, according to his lawyer, Alan Schwartz. The shock-jock is due back in court next month. Schwartz also said in defense of his client:
“Mr. Cumia emphatically denies the allegations brought against him, and is optimistic that when the truth comes out, he will be exonerated. Simply put, things are not always what they appear to be, and this case is a perfect example of that.” One fan believes that Anthony got set up by this girl, who has been on the radio show a few times, the fan said. The fan named James said the girl “comes off as a little bit wild, a little bit gold digger.”
Cumia, 54, was arrested at his home in Long Island at about 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. Police charged him with assault, unlawful imprisonment, strangulation and criminal mischief.
