There are not many actors who get to play the same character for 40 years and still fit into the same costume! British actor Anthony Daniels has been thrilling audiences in every Star Wars movie as the wonderfully entertaining and brilliant droid, C-3PO. Of course he goes nowhere without his trusted pal, R2D2 and in the new film there’s a new droid to contend with, BB8 who is already stealing hearts from the footage that has been released.
When director JJ Abrams first called Anthony Daniels, he asked the British actor to voice the much-loved droid in the new series. Daniels not only voiced the character but played the droid on screen in a tightly created armored costume in the original trilogy, although the character was heavily CG animated in the prequels. Well, Daniels not only got back into the suit, but he still fit the original. He did admit that it was tweaked making it a bit more modern and comfortable, but it’s all him on screen (and he’s VERY proud of it!)
Just like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, actor Anthony Daniels is an incredibly important part of the Star Wars legacy. He’s just slightly handicapped by the fact that you can’t see his face under the C-3PO helmet. He and Kenny Baker, the man inside R2-D2, are the only actors to be part of every single film, so when Star Wars: Episode VII started to begin production there was no question that they would return.
The secrecy surrounding this new chapter in the Star Wars legacy has been high. Even journalists doing interviews for the film were not permitted pre-screenings. Daniels’ has been quite vocal about the secrecy telling the Guardian in the U.K, “ It’s ludicrous,” he quipped. “For heaven’s sake, it’s a movie. When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it. I got a hangover just reading it.”
No matter, audiences are so excited to see the film that ticket pre-sales were sold out in minutes and theatres across the globe have been added to accommodate anxious fans and movie-goers when it officially opens on December 18th.
Star Wars:The Force Awakens features all of the original actors mentioned above – plus Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca – in addition to newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyongo, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong, Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow.
