Only one wine festival is dedicated to Alsace-style wines and it is the International Alsace Varietals Festival, on February 20 hosted by the Anderson Valley winegrowers. This unique and exclusive wine tasting event celebrates Alsace-style wines such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Muscat. This festival includes educational sessions, a grand tasting and winemaker dinner.
Saturday starts with the Alsace Varietals Festival Educational Session where winemakers from around the world discuss winemaking and grape growing specifically for Alsace varietals.
The Festival Grand Tasting takes place on Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and here you will get to meet the winemakers and taste Alsace style white wines from around the world and enjoy foods suited for aromatic whites including Tomales Bay oysters, Tart Flambee and more. Over 100 wines will be poured including Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat.
As you stroll through the Grand Tasting Hall, you will be able to taste wines from Balo, Barra, Brooks, Cartograph, Claiborne & Churchill, Discover the East, Dry River Wines, Dutton Goldfield, FEL Wines, Foris Vineyards, Greenwood Ridge Vineyards, Handley Cellars, Husch Vineyards, Lazy Creek Vineyards, Long Meadow Ranch, Lula Cellars, Navarro Vineyards, New Zealand winegrowers, Pacific Rim, Philips Hill Winery, Philo Ridge Vineyards, Rein, Robert Sinskey, Stony Hill, Tatomer, Domaines Schlumberger, Thomas Fogarty, Toulouse, and more. The tasting is held at the Mendocino County fairgrounds in downtown Boonville and ticket price is $75.
Later that evening will be the “Winemakers Dinner” at 6:30 p.m. where you can continue your exploration of the noble Alsace grapes at Scharffenberger Cellar’s elegant private dining room. You will be surrounded by works of art while savoring the warm, cozy atmosphere of the great site. You will enjoy a special menu created by a local favorite, Chef Rocco Hansen. Ticket price for the Winemakers Dinner is $130.
