The 18th annual Monsignor Paul Baxter Golf Tournament returns to once again honour the man’s legacy at Anderson Links on June 11.
The fundraiser benefits the Monsignor Paul Baxter Memorial Foundation. The foundation awards seven scholarships valued at $1,500 to graduates of the Ottawa Catholic School Board. The tournament’s registration fee is $100 per player. It includes 18-holes of golf, power cart and the dinner/awards gathering.
Monsignor Paul Baxter (1934-1998) was ordained June 5, 1959. He spent many years teaching and coaching sports at St. Pius X and St. Paul High Schools, as well as serving in various parishes on weekends.
When he retired from teaching he became pastor at St. Patrick’s Parish on Fallowfield Road, while continuing his dedication and service to Catholic schools. In 1991, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association recognized his many outstanding contributions to Catholic education by presenting him with the Bishop Redding Award. In 1996, Pope John Paul II elevated Father Paul to Monsignor Paul.
His students and parishioners knew him as a thorough teacher, humble priest and compassionate person. On many occasions his lessons and homilies ended with the message: “Try your best, keep the faith, be kind to one another.”
