At Winnebago County Animal Services in Illinois, a man who had reluctantly been separated from his best canine pal two years ago was reunited on Thursday, thanks to fate, alert animal services personnel and a tiny microchip.
Two years ago, Jose from Columbus, Wisconsin had been going through terrible times. According to the Winnebago County Animal Services Facebook, Jose went through a divorce, lost his home and was forced to live in his car. His dog Chaos was a puppy he adopted, and according to Jose, “Chaos helped me through so much in my life, I took him everywhere with me!” Jose realized an active puppy, named Chaos for a reason, wouldn’t be able to live in the car with him, and so he sought out one of his friends who promised to keep his dog until Jose could get back on his feet.
Three months later, Jose was getting it all together, but his friend turned out not to be much of a friend and refused to return his dog. “I didn’t think I would ever see my dog again,” said Jose.
And now the story takes an unusual twist. On Wednesday, a Winnebago County Services staff member was at home in South Beloit and found a dog in her driveway. An Animal Services Officer came out and brought the dog back to the shelter. The dog was wearing a collar with a 2014 National Identification Number. Oddly enough, Jose had been home in Wisconsin and had been looking through his emails to come upon a renewal notice for Chaos’ microchip. As Jose reminisced about his best friend and became sullen thinking of their separation, the phone rang. Imagine the irony; the person from Winnebago County Animal Services called to tell Jose that his dog had been found thanks to the microchip!
“I couldn’t get to the shelter fast enough,” said Jose. “I couldn’t wait for it to open so I could see Chaos! I left at 8 am today and had an hour and a half drive, so I was very anxious! I did debate getting the microchip for Chaos because at that time, it was all about affordability. I was living paycheck to paycheck and was worried about food and shelter. But I just had this feeling that it was the best thing to do, and it turned out to be the best thing I ever did! Honestly, without that chip, I know in my heart, that I would’ve never seen him again.”
