In Egypt, divinity is literally felt at night. And as a woman in the city of Cairo, one can feel one of the most liberating powers to take place. The emotion of being comforted at night time. Never afraid or ashamed to be out, while experiencing this ecstasy. Most importantly, when one is in the midst of natural scenery, it becomes all too tempting to resist.
One of the beauties of the American University in Cairo’s New Cairo campus, at night, is its ability to feel safe in darkness. Memories of walking outside of the hostel, just to experience nature at night was a calming and enjoyable aura. The silence of the campus, but while hearing the voice of plants, crickets, and light winds. The chance to hear darkness speak. To walk through the pathways, surrounded by waterfalls, fruit tress, and flowers using design to present their inner gifts. All of it, an opportunity for a woman, in Cairo, to feel powerful in her natural element with the Earth.
Void of the loud conversations of students passing by, the entertainment of assembly hour, and the sound of man-made labor. The only sound that matters at the moment are the secrets revealed through the island, surrounding the campus.
If a woman has ever taken the time, the opportunity, to walk around the campus at night, run her fingers through encompassing life surrounding her, she will learn her domain. That she has power. That moment when the forces of nature are one with her. Protecting her. Guiding and reviving the life inside her. Reminders of an ancient memory when women understood this power. This magic to perform natural elements of fire, wind, water, and earth. A sense of beauty. Feeling beautiful. While embracing your womanhood and femininity in all its creative being.
The other highlight of this experience is the essence of feeling that one is in control of the space. As you walk, every natural energy interacting with you is honored to have graced your presence. In reverence of your being as a woman to produce, create, and re-channel the life cycle. Passing through those natural elements, you are viewed in wonder. The ecstasy of Earth’s vegetation directing themselves towards your being. Having your attention as a woman, a personification of the Earth. You have graced them with their presence.
And such is but one of many experiences at night. A growing discovery, which prompts many more returns to future ecstasies of a sleeping awakening.
