Here’s the inside story of the arrest of Ammon Bundy and five other activists at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
Pete Santilli has been reporting on social media. On Facebook, he posted this:
“This evening, the FBI made a legal, felony stop on a vehicle carrying Ammon Bundy and several other individuals. After a shoot out with the FBI, four individuals were reportedly taken into custody, including Ammon Bundy. Two individuals are reported to have been taken to the Burns hospital, which is currently on lock down. FBI sources stated that those at the Refuge are currently free to leave unimpeded, implying that there might be action it they do not leave immediately.”
Santilli said, “Two men were down, possibly injured.”
Arun Gupta on Twitter (@arunindy) is reporting live on the Bundy arrest. He tweeted a number of photos from the inside, at the site of the arrests. Gupta wrote at 6:39 PM “I was right there on 395 where Ammon Bundy was allegedly shot. Ambulance had not even arrived. Thought it was an accident.”
He described “six cops, FBI w/ automatic rifles at Oathkeeper arrest.” See the lead photo in the slideshow.
In another tweet, he showed a photo of an FBI agent at the arrest of Joe O’Shaughnessy,” saying that “FBI agent who looks like militiaman in Burns at arrest of Oathkeeper Joe O’Shaughnessy.” A third photo of the arrest of O’Shaughnessy had this statement, “A #bundymilitia supporter, Oathkeeper Joe O’Shaughnessy arrest in Burns for prob cause crim offense. State cops, FBI.”
The Guardian reported that FBI officials said: “they arrested Bundy, his brother Ryan Bundy, Bryan Cavalier, Shawna Cox and Ryan Payne on Tuesday afternoon after they stopped them along the highway.”
“The agency described the shootout and arrests as resulting from “an enforcement action to bring into custody a number of individuals associated with the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge” that occurred at 4.25pm PST.”
The Daily Mail is reporting on this, along with NBC and other news outlets.
UPDATE—December 28th, 2016. The FBI released aircraft video footage of the chase and capture of a white truck and jeep driven by militia members. The video also shows the fatal shooting of Robert “LaVoy” Finicum after he nearly hit an FBI agent on the ground while evading a roadblock.
