With advanced medical strides in plastic surgery, many individuals are undergoing operative and non-operative procedures to ensure that they look as good as they feel. In an article recently published in the Washington Times, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that Americans spent around $13 million to improve their looks through facial and body rejuvenating procedures in 2015.
These annual reports help those in the field of plastic surgery as well as potential patients glean a better understanding as to what procedures are maintaining popularity as well as those making a debut.
In the annual report, it was indicated that liposuction was by far the most sought after procedure. Following liposuction, other procedures in the aesthetic roster included eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, and breast augmentation operations.
Dr. James C. Grotting, a highly regarded professional and president of the ASAPS, was quoted as crediting the quest to retain workforce competitiveness as a driving force for patients who ultimately make the decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure.
“Youth is a commodity,” he said, “and people are investing in themselves to maintain a younger, healthier appearance.”
Many board certified plastic surgeons would agree with this pithy statement. For the most part, patients are indeed investing in themselves for their careers as well as other avenues in their lives. Plastic surgery is a highly personal decision and each procedure must be tailored for each person.
As always, the report was comprehensive. The statistics show that females made up 90 percent of those patients undergoing rejuvenation procedures. Since 1997, men who underwent plastic surgery rose 325 percent calculating to 1.5 million. However, the leading age group identified as undergoing rejuvenating procedures was between 30 to 50 years of age. They attributed for 40 percent of the procedures performed in the nation.
For non-operative procedures, Botox was in the lead with 4.2 million procedures being performed in 2015. This cosmetic injection is still one of the most popular in the industry.
In the report, it was clear that plastic surgery affords aesthetic opportunities to people of various age ranges.
