Treehouses and tents have long been popular outdoors items with children of varied ages and the innovative minds at Canaima Outdoors have recently released an all-new treetop hideout –called the “TreePod”–that is destined to take backyards by storm. Launching on Kickstarter, the TreePod is a treehouse alternative that goes anywhere and is designed to enable outdoor fun for children and adults alike.
TreePod Hanging Treehouses LLC is the newest project from Canaima Outdoors Inc., the Colorado company known since 2009 for bringing slacklining to the mainstream – currently through the brand Slackline Industries. The Canaima team are entrepreneurs and professionals with a love of the outdoors who have over 50 years of collective experience in the industry. Canaima Outdoors prides itself on bringing energy and expertise to the launch of the TreePod.
The TreePod was developed to bring the magic of a treehouse to backyards everywhere. Even where there are no trees, the available TreePod Stand creates a backyard adventure space like no other. “The TreePod is lightweight, portable and fully removable, it’s the perfect solution for those who do have the time or resources or do not want to go through the hassle of building a permanent treehouse,” explains Ricardo Bottome, CEO of Canaima Outdoors. “As a parent of four, the TreePod has become a favorite and a fixture in our backyard.”
The Kickstarter campaign launched on November 18, 2015 with a goal to raise $50,000; now the design, testing and prototyping are complete and the TreePod is ready to move into production. Kickstarter funds will be used to pay for molds, raw materials, packaging and additional costs of taking the TreePod from prototype to backyard staple. Contributions to support the Kickstarter were offered at multiple levels and benefits for supporters include early-bird specials, limited colorways and custom printing. The initial TreePod production run will ship in the spring of 2016. According to the official press release:
The TreePod was designed to maximize fun, simplicity and safety. Parents and kids alike will enjoy the opportunity to spend more time outdoors with the TreePod set up in their yard or taken with them on a camping trip. Simplicity of use offers easy set up and take-down, making it tree-friendly. Safety from an over-engineered design ensures piece of mind. Built from durable nylon and aluminum framing, the The TreePod affixes to any hanging point via a steel quick link. The fabric is weather resistant and treated with a durable water repellent for all-weather fun while a UV-coating offers additional protection from the sun’s rays.
Thus far, the TreePod has been so well received that it is scheduled to debut at the famed Toy Industry Association (TIA) Toy Fair in New York City in February 2016. Recently Ricardo Bottome, the President of Canaima Outdoors, spoke with the Examiner about the Treepod and the company in general:
Meagan Meehan (M.M.): How and when was Canaima Outdoors started and why was that name chosen?
Ricardo Bottome (R.B.): Canaima Outdoors was established in Boulder, CO in 2008 and is named after a beautiful National Park in Venezuela.
M.M.: Overall, how many items has Canaima Outdoors produced? Has one product been especially popular?
R.B.: Canaima Outdoors has been a manufacturer and distributor for several products over the years such as packs and hammocks, but our focus, most of our attention and biggest successes are with slacklines and our brand Slackline Industries. Slackline Industries has created slacklines with design improvements and has had a significant impact on shaping the future of the sport especially in relation to the competition circuit.
M.M.: How do you come up with the ideas for your products?
R.B.: We love being outside at Canaima. Our products are developed around getting people to spend more time enjoying the outdoors. If there is something we could create to bring them outside and have fun, we pursue it.
M.M.: What kinds of items do you hope to expand to in the future?
R.B.: The TreePod has been met with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm thus far. We’ve had requests for a larger model. We hope to expand on this idea to make additional models designed for car and festival camping.
M.M.: Thus far, what has been the most rewarding part of working with Canaima Outdoors?
R.B.: It’s rewarding to work for a small company where everyone’s ideas are valued and become part of the company strategy. All of the employees are outdoor enthusiasts and bring a unique prospective based on their individual hobbies and experiences.
M.M.: Where do you hope Canaima Outdoors will be ten years from now?
R.B.: We want to be known as the leading brand in the slackline business. Through our introduction of the sport to adventure, fitness and competition communities we want to make slacklining a more mainstream activity. We also plan to grow the original TreePod and add a line of models that support various camping and backyard uses.
M.M.: Do you have any exciting future projects in the works?
R.B.: We’re very focused on the TreePod right now as that is our new product that it not yet out, so all plans for the near future are based on supporting a successful launch.
