According to Donna Spencer of the Canadian Press on Friday, Chelsea Carey’s team from the Glencoe Club in Calgary and representing Alberta, advanced to the championship final of the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Team Alberta qualified for the final by beating team Canada 7-5 in the 1-2 page playoff game.
It was a dominant performance by the Alberta squad. Carey skipped 96%, which was the highest single game percentage for any skip during the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Third Amy Nixon was 94%, second Jocelyn Peterman was 91% and lead Laine Peters was 86%.
Team Alberta got off to a quick 2-0 lead and then took a 4-1 lead after five ends. Team Alberta then stole another point in the sixth end and picked up two points in the eighth end. Then after Canada made things interesting in the ninth end by scoring three points after a Peterman flash, Carey made an impressive double takeout in the tenth end to secure the win.
With the loss, Team Canada will now have to play in the semi-final game on Saturday evening. Manitoba is playing Northern Ontario in the 3-4 page playoff game Saturday afternoon with the winner playing Canada. Both Manitoba and Northern Ontario had a round robin record of seven wins and four losses.
