Coors Light along with the ViewHouse in Downtown Denver hosted the “Coors Light Center Ice Beer Summit” Saturday, February 27, 2016. And in keeping with the major events of today, hockey legends Adam Foote and Larry Murphy met center stage to square off and swap hockey stories.
As the heated rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings prepare to take to the ice at Coors Field tonight, yes the same Coors Field where the Colorado Rockies play, Denver was a sea of jerseys. Some were favoring the Detroit Red Wings while most were supporting the Colorado Avalanche. The hockey rink has been in the making for the past few weeks. And with the temperatures in the 60’s, it was hard to fathom that an outdoor hockey game would be played in this type of weather. Saturday, February 27, 2016 will go down as a great date in sports history. And as the teams were preparing to meet, the ViewHouse was filled with fans enjoying Coors Light, food and some fun atmosphere. But they were all there for one main reason. To witness two former hockey greats, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Larry Murphy discuss what made them great on the ice, what pregame rituals they did before the games and of course who the better players are. The Master of Ceremonies was long time hockey great Jeremy Roenick.
The first time the teams met in the Mile High city, they played at the old McNichols Arena on October 6, 1995. The Avalanche defeated the Red Wings 3-2. Friday night, the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings met for an alumni game outdoors at Coors Field and the Colorado Avalanche came out on top 5-2. The estimated crowd was 43,319 and the night time Colorado weather provided a pleasant evening for everyone involved.
Before today’s game, Adam Foote was asked who he hated the most from the Detroit Red Wings and Adam stated “Everyone that was on that bench”. Larry Murphy narrowed it down and said “Joe Sakic or Peter Forsberg. Either one could skate and either one could score.”
Another thing people learned today was that one ritual Colorado Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote always did was when getting ready it was always the left leg first. Left leg into the pants first, left skate on first. On the other side, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Larry Murphy said his biggest ritual was, “The day the schedule came out, I always looked for the dates that we played the Colorado Avalanche”. “I had to check number one that we did not play them after playing the night before because if we did, we were all worried that the Colorado Avalanche had an automatic win. If we had a day or two to rest, we would be sure to give them a game”.
The ViewHouse was full of fans for both teams. The “Coors Light Center Ice Beer Summit” was a hit with all the fans. This was a fun get together and great to hear both men speak of the highlights they had for the game of hockey. They instilled in all that no matter what your dreams are, you can accomplish them. They will not always be easy, but they can be accomplished.
Master of Ceremonies Jeremy Roenick shared some his great moments and brought some amazing insight into a game that everyone loves to watch. Jeremy actually hated both these teams as they had a lot of players that were faster, stronger, smarter and younger than him and he knew that both teams were trouble.
But no matter how much each player badgered the other, it was all in fun and Coors Light did an amazing job by having three of the best players come together to share stories, memories of jokes played on teammates, the history of what made these teams hate each other while on the ice and teach people that an on ice rivalry does not carry through to normal life. When people ask later on in life, “Where were you when the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings played a historical outdoor game at Coors Field”, hopefully you can say you were part of the “Coors Light Center Ice Beer Summit”.
