Francis Xavier: What inspired you to start the FitKat blog, and what can people expect from FitKat?
Katrina Bowden: I love health and fitness! Ive always been a health nut who loves to workout and find new ways to challenge myself physically and mentally. I thought that in the blogosphere there was a little bit lacking in the healthy lifestyle/fitness space. I’m not a fitness professional or a registered nutritionist, which a lot of wellness bloggers are, and I wanted to give readers an honest, normal girl approach that they can relate to. My readers can find everything that falls into the “healthy lifestyle” category: fitness tips, information on the coolest/best studios, healthy eating tips, recipes, general life wellness tips…and a little sprinkle of beauty, travel and fashion. As an actress, I often live an exciting life- I’m going to be sharing the ins and outs of my daily grind!
FX: Have you encountered any surprises/challenges while putting FitKat together?
KB: Not too many challenges so far, other than having a lot to say and needing to hone in on my true message! Thats why I decided to make FitKat a healthy lifestyle blog and not just a fitness blog.
FX: Who are you collaborating with in the creation of FitKat and what makes for a successful collaboration?
KB: All posts are written by me and all shop items are curated by me! Im going to be collaborating with a few bloggers coming up about topics that aren’t exactly my specialty per se, and will be collaborating with some of my favorite fitness studios as well. Studio collabs are great so I can showcase the places I love to workout in@ I think that collaborating is SUCH a great way to get a new perspective on a topic…or a way to feature something I love.
FX: Do you notice any trends emerging in the lifestyle/fitness worlds? Are you trying new methods?
KB: There are SO many trends in the fitness/health world… in fact, fitness and health are major trends alone! I love that people love to take care of their bodies and there are constantly new workouts, new healthy-eating trends…my job is to try them and weed out the “fads” and tell my readers what I like and why I like it and why it works (at least for me!)
Spinning and barre classes are still holding strong, while paleo and low sugar eating habits are also still becoming widely popular. “diets” are OUT!
FX: What are some writers, artists, and fitness leaders that have motivated you?
KB: Im motivated by so many people, aren’twe all?? As for bloggers who inspire me: HBFIT, SkinnyTaste and The Skinny Confidential are blogs that really nail it in the health/lifestyle category.
FX: Are there any key diet or lifestyle tips that you adhere to?
KB: I love to eat. I also love to workout, so its all about balance. I eat very healthy, but I’ve also never met a glass of wine or a french fry I didn’t love. I don’t restrict myself; rather I believe in moderation. I eat healthy 95% of the time, and then when I want to, Ill eat some fries, or indulge in a dessert I love. One dessert or one burger and fries won’t derail you’re entire life- making a daily habit of it will!
FX: On your blog you mention being “obsessed” with finding ways to challenge yourself; what challenges/goals do you have for 2016?
KB: I want to be a better version of myself at all times! Im a person who gets stressed out/worried easily and I have a bit of a temper when I am on edge…so I am working on being calmer, and letting things roll of my back. I know I can’t completely change who I am and suddenly be this easy carefree “whatever” person…but I can actively try to let things go and just go withthe flow a little more. Yoga is helping!
FX: A healthy lifestyle includes an appreciation of balance, and this seems to be the hardest thing for many people to achieve. How do you maintain the balance between maintaining good health and indulging in guilty pleasures?
KB: It’s not easy! I sort of touched on this above…but its about letting yourself have the stuff you really want sometimes…deprivation=failure and guilt! If you are craving it, have a little bit and move on with your life… don’t get hung up on those few fries you indulged in- instead make your next meal something healthy you feel good about eating!
FX: You also discuss creating delicious meals; can you share tips on getting healthy food on the table fast?
KB: I LOVE to cook!! My main tip here is to try out recipes- by trying things out you’lllearn about flavor balances and eventuallybe able to customize recipes to make them your own. A recipe, to me, is just a starting point for my own creation. Have fun with cooking. It’s also cheaper and healthier to cook your own food- so I highly recommend it!
FX: Favorite go to recipe:
KB: Chile Bronzed Salmon- up on my blog! Its easy, healthy and SOOOO good!
FX: Three things you cannot live without?
KB: Lancome definicils mascara, yoga pants from Lululemon, Ling Face Hydrator
FX: What does being brave mean to you?
KB: Being brave means getting out of your comfort zone. Whether that means going to a workout class you’re afraid to try, pushing harding in a cycling class, taking on an opportunity that scares you or just trusting your own instincts…if you don’t take chances, you won’t grow as a person. Getting out of your comfort zone is the only way to find out what you are really capable of. One of my favorite cycling instructors once said during class (during a push) “Identify that this is your comfort zone…now prove how great you are by flying right past it!” I loved that.
FX: Where can readers find you online?
