Today’s bible study is from the Gospel of Matthew 7:24: Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
This bible passage is one which bears great strength and wisdom. One of the main points in this lesson is the meaning of these words of mine. For, if we do not understand what words Matthew is speaking off, how can we possibly put them into practice? It is critical that we find as many reputable sources as possible to decipher the intent of ‘these words.
According to the New Testament Greek Lexicon, these words could be defined as the sayings of God, a decree, mandate or order, the moral precepts given by God, Old Testament prophecy given by the prophets or what is declared, a thought, declaration, aphorism, a weighty saying, a dictum, a maxim.
If we follow the mandates and sayings of God, if we follow His decrees and orders as well as His moral precepts, we will surely become children of God and walk in His holy path. Through the bible we learn the greatest declaration or dictum. The greatest declaration in the New Testament is to ‘Love one another as yourself.’ If everyone truly followed only this one precept, what a better world it would be. It would virtually do away with pride, injustice, prejudice and hatred. It would knock down barriers and reach out the arms of friendship. It would grant agape, true Christian love, to every human being that is the creation of God.
Next we come to a wise man. What is a wise man and what sets him apart from other men? A wise man is one who is intelligent, prudent and mindful of one’s interests. He is also the man (or woman) who makes wise decisions and wise choices.
We all know the store of the Three Little Pigs: One who built his house of straw, one who built his house of sticks and one of bricks. When the wolf came, as invariably he would, only the house built of bricks was strong enough to withstand the onslaught. We, like the little pigs, must choose wisely and built upon a firm foundation. We must sink out piers deeply and set our mortar carefully. We must build upon the rock. But not just upon the rock of granite cornerstone but the sure foundation of God, who is our rock and our redeemer. The house built by a foolish man will topple and fall. The house built by a wise man will survive and flourish to the glory of God.
Always remember, we have a sure foundation in God and it is up to each of us to find that sure foundation, build upon it, and, like a wise man, ever strive to grow and learn in the ways of God and spread the love of agape to all men and women.
