Anytime good food is cooking, whether it be during the Christmas holidays or not, those smells become memorable! They always lure us to the kitchen in anticipation of what is cooking. This is especially true here at the holidays. There are many wonderful foods that we associate with those special fragrances. Psychiatrists tell us that we often recognize a scent from our childhood that lasts long into adulthood. Let’s put together today a recipe that’s not eaten nor drunk…..but just to smell! “Old-Fashioned Christmas Aroma” will bring back some special memories, with its combination of fruit rinds and spices.
This is an excellent recipe in that it enables you to recycle the rinds from the fruits of lemons, oranges and grapefruits. If you happen to have the peels from your morning orange juice or your grapefruit, you’re about set to make this interesting recipe. All you do is place the fruit rinds in a kettle or a regular saucepan. You now add water, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and whole allspice. This is brought to boiling and set to simmer for as long as needed to perfume your home. This can be used more than once. In fact, I’ve used it about three for four times before I finally get rid of it and start fresh again.
If you happen to not have the whole spices, the ground will work all right. You would want to use about 1/2 tablespoon of the cloves and allspice and about a tablespoon of the cinnamon. Also, you can use tangerine peels in this fragrance, too. I always think of Christmas when I smell a fresh tangerine, so this would be a great addition to the peels you have.
Rememeber–THIS IS NOT TO BE EATEN OR DRUNK! But just to smell! It will perfume your home and put everyone in a warm, holiday mood. Try this one if you’re having a party or company over the holiday season!
While you’re readying your home for the holidays, you’ll naturally want something to munch on while you do that! A few years ago, I shared a recipe for “German Hard Candy”, which is a fun and flavorful hard candy to have during the holidays. In case you missed the recipe, clink on the embedded link to get it.
