Vic Challenger is the pen name of Victoria Custer, an adventure and travel writer for her town newspaper. Vic is the reincarnation of a 100,000 year old cavewoman named Nat-ul. She vividly remembers her former life and it has made her stronger in this life. Her path is to find her soulmate, Nu,that she separated from in death in her past life as Nat-ul. Vic is accompanied by her longtime friend from high school, Lin Li. They train hard for facing physical feats that mere men of their time could never overcome. They have traveled the world taking pictures and gaining knowledge on interesting people and historical finds. The story mentions the timeline of them missing the first year of women’s right to vote because they were on assignment in Mongolia. The arrived home to vote for a local election and they commit to wanting to be home for November 1924 to vote for the president. This adds to the imagery and to the mindset of the characters values and mindset.
In this fifth installment, they travel to the Australian Outback to visit Vic’s mom, Ethel Hudgeons and Pete, her husband. When they are traveling to the location to meet the family, they prove themselves with sharp reflexes and Vic fends off a poisonous snake. At their arrival, locals greet them with a celebration. The action turns up when unknown men crash the party and rob everyone. Vic and Lin Li, pursue the robbers not knowing what is in store. Based upon their suspicions they are on a hunch that the robbers are after an even bigger treasure.
At a certain point, they catch up with them at a cattle station that has been abandoned. They initially face starved trained-to-kill Tasmanian wolves, also known as thylacines. They refrain from going in with guns blazing on the robbers. Masterfully, they survive off the land to keep nourished for the continued chase.
As they move forward, they end up in a small forest where large unseen creatures crush the thylacines like dust. Vic and Lin almost get pulverized. The chase continues to a grotto where they continue their quest for the robbers and the potential of finding treasure. Vic faces off with the leader of the gang. This story will leave readers on edge with wondering if she is able to survive to go on to find her soulmate or has she taken on too much and hits the end of the road.
