Research into this story seems to be right out of a book of holistic medicine or out of grandma’s book of home-brewed remedies. But for one horse named Miracle, facing certain doom by euthanasia, the honey treatment was indeed a gift and miraculous cure. This story received minimal media coverage with the source story appearing just a couple of days ago. To Miracle, the treatment given with honey literally saved her life. It worked so well on Miracle that it could be an important alternative solution for many other injured horses whose only choice might otherwise be euthanasia.
Miracle was certainly used to the difficulties of life, having narrowly escaped the slaughterhouse. with literally short hours to spare. She was saved from that horrible fate after abuse and torment and trucking as a horse without a future. After her escape from a brutal death, Miracle found herself rescued by Sue Gessey of the Animal Healing Trust in Withal, Worcestershire, and life became kinder. She was feeling great and thriving at her rescue charity home and then – the accident – and her life was once again in obvious jeopardy.
Miracle found herself in serious trouble when she rammed into a fence. No one saw what actually happened but the end result was extensive blood loss and a horrible wound. Miracle was left traumatized and bleeding from a severe raggedy foot-long gash in her rear leg. One veterinarian advised that Miracle be put down due to the severity of her wound. Meanwhile, Gessey was searching for solutions online and sought out another professional opinion. She took Miracle to be seen by Dr Gavinder Panesar at 608 Equine and Farm Vets in Rowington, Warks.
This veterinarian suggested an alternative but unusual treatment. He recommended putting honey on the gashed wound two times each day, keeping it very clean and covered well, and making the horse as comfortable as possible during her recovery. Gessey wanted to save Miracle and decided to try the honey healing method.
Dr. Panesar performed necessary surgery on Miracle’s leg using sedation at Gessey’s property. He left Gessey with instructions to apply the manuka honey http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/manuka-honey.html directly to the wound every day. He told her that the honey would work like a natural antiseptic on Miracle’s leg.
Already a great believer in the many benefits of honey, Gessey began using honey produced by Animal Healing Trust’s own bees. The results were stunning. According to Gessey, Miracle was able to put some weight on her injured leg after only six days, and her overall recovery was nearly complete after just five weeks had passed. This was an unbelievable success story!
Dr. Panesar noted,
You have to pick and choose what you use the honey for. We use it for wounds that you can’t stitch back together and that are infected. It is really sterile and creates an environment which bacteria struggles to grow in.
We use the honey to fill in deficit in the wound and then the body itself regenerates the tissue until the wound gets smaller and the skin grows over it. The wound is getting smaller every time I see Miracle so she is making an amazing recovery.
Sometimes there are solutions available and it becomes important to try them. In Miracle’s case, there were really only two choices, death or treatment by a tried-and-true remedy of honey. And, once again, Miracle lived up to her name.
