On Wednesday the 27th of January in 2016, Innovation Village hosted Startup Soiree at The Arch Social Club on the west side of Baltimore, Maryland. It was the biggest startup community forum of this Winter. According to Wikipedia, “The Arch Social Clubhouse is the last remaining venue for live entertainment (especially Jazz) on Baltimore’s historic Pennsylvania Avenue commercial strip.” Who knew one establishment could hold so many new and old business leaders in one building. Did you know? Startup Soiree is a monthly meet up event in Baltimore, Maryland that creates evocative dialogues among business creators as well as leaders within the local startup community. Talk about a very intimate learning environment for local Startup Enthusiasts! Launched on Dr. Martin Luther King Day this January, Innovation Village is a one stop shop partnership sponsor for innovators, start-ups and small to mid market companies looking to set off novel products and technologies in the consumer goods industry.
Did you know? The Innovation Village empowerment zone in Central West Baltimore runs from Coppin State University to the Maryland Institute College of Art and from Mondamin Mall to Martin Luther King Boulevard.
The celebration took place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. serving complimentary bites from Rogue Fine Catering and wine selections from Tenth Harvest. The fresh brew was flowing from every corner of the jazz clubhouse; the food bites range from various grilled veggie plates to fancy meat sliders. The coolest part of it all was enjoying the Town Hall dialogue on ‘Raising A Seed Round’ whereas, Yet Analytics co-founders Margaret Roth & Shelly Blake-Plock were the guest speakers for the night. Did you know? Yet Analytics main mission is to leverage data through interchangeability technologies for the purpose of training within the U.S. Department of Defense. It’s a fact that, Baltimore’s own Yet Analytics just closed a $1.3M seed round funding deal. Yet Analytics supports a data platform capable of making the data of experience more visible, accessible and actionable.
Just to recap the evening of events, what were Yet Analytics key discussion points: how to find funding resources for startup businesses, how to pitch ideas for funding startups, what should be one(s) main purpose for starting a business intail. The bottom line is, if you want to create a startup and get it funded make sure your startup is based on ideas that solve real world problems that matter.
Another cool highlight of that insightful event was hearing the current president of The Arch Social Club (the hub of the Pennsylvania Avenue) speak on the history of this epic 108 year old Jazz Clubhouse. What “The Arch Social Club” means to the city of Baltimore. Keep in mind, there were also several West Baltimore community association presidents in attendance discussing the rebuilding efforts of Baltimore’s historic Pennsylvania Avenue commercial strip. Did you know? During the 2015 Baltimore protests and riots; Baltimore’s historic Pennsylvania Avenue commercial strip was greatly damaged and affected.
The first Startup Soiree of 2016 was informative and fun; it showcased successful Baltimore startups businesses such as Gudalow Juice, Columbia Bank, Natty Boh, Julie Andersen Photography, Dovecote Café, Intrinsic Events and Pixilated. I so, enjoyed this nightlife networking event at the The Arch Social Club via the 1st “Start Soiree” in West Baltimore full of jazzy networking. Cheers to the rebirth of central West Baltimore especially the historic Pennsylvania Avenue commercial strip in Baltimore, Maryland; and cheers to all the underground entrepreneurs in Baltimore may your side hustles turn into legal and luscious successful businesses. If you’re from Baltimore City aka “Charm City” you know the unspoken nature of a Baltimorean, we all have hidden talents and everybody has a side hustle. As a result, we are the perfect city to jump start the startup/freelance revolution. The future of progressive work awaits us all and as that old saying goes “if you can’t find a job, make one!”
