It is that time of year when fans are waiting with baited breath for the festival to announce who will be entertaining at the 2016 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival! Last Thursday there was a hiccup on their website that temporarily listed the big name artists that are appearing in 2016. If you weren’t online, you missed the information.
However, rumor has a list of the big name artists (BNA) that has slipped out on the website’s chat forum and it looks like a good one. This is not official, but most of the names seem feasible from a scheduling point of view. Also, Paul Simon is on the list and he had leaked that he was on the entertainment roster for 2016 at a concert last month. Without further ado . . . .
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an LA based band that formed circa 1983. This will be a first time appearance for The Peppers and I am sure they will draw a big crowd.
Stevie Wonder is on the list for 2016. He has appeared at fest once since Katrina in 2008 to a huge crowd at the largest stage on the fairgrounds. He has been touring over the last year with his Songs In the Key of Life tour. That would be a major treat for fest goers!
Pearl Jam has played the fest in 2010 and drew another huge crowd. Neil Young, Paul Simon and Van Morrison have played the festival since Katrina. Actually both Simon and Morrison have played twice since Katrina. One of the sets with Simon was with his partner Art Garfunkel. Unfortunately, Garfunkel’s voice failed during that show. Hopefully Neil Young will bring the crackerjack band, Promise of the Real, with him!!
Snoop Dogg and My Morning Jacket are also on the first list. This will be a first appearance for Snoop Dogg. More on the first list are Gary Clark Jr., Jonny Lang, Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Govt Mule, Arlo Guthrie, Boz Scaggs, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Snarky Puppy.
If your appetite for great entertainment has not been sated, here are some more entertainers rumored for the New Orleans Jazz festival feast: Elvis Castello, Bonnie Raitt, Julio Iglesias, Herbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter, Michael McDonald, Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Galactic, Janelle Monae, Preservation Hall, Kermit Ruffins, The Isley Brothers, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, Chris Botti, Grace Potter, Brandi Carlile, Buffy Sainte Marie, Aaron Neville, Arturo Sandoval, Ellis Marsalis, Irma Thomas, CeCe Winans, Taj Mahal, Terence Blanchard, Gregory Porter, The Lone Bellow, Punch Brothers, Elvin Bishop, John Hammond, Alpha Blondy, Rhiannon Giddens, Elle King, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk with Art Neville, Rebirth, Jonathan Batiste, Big Freedia, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and many many more!
Also mentioned on the site is two tribute sets: a BB King tribute as well as an Allen Toussaint tribute. The tributes are rumored to consist of some of the above entertainers as well as local artists. Both sets would be a must!!
It is anybody’s guess as to why the official release of the lineup is being delayed. Many times it is due to contractual hang-ups. At this time there has not even been a date announced for the official announcement. Maybe next week??
