The 2016 Mazda CX-9 made its Texas debut at the DFW Auto Show while a large group of automotive journalists snapped photos, kicked tires, and asked questions. Shortly afterwards, Mazda released their pricing and packaging information. This is the newest entry in the very crowded mid-size, three-row crossover SUV category of vehicles.
It appears that the 2016 CX-9 will offer a fun-to-drive, but highly versatile CUV at a decent price starting at just $31,520 as an MSRP. Obviously, there are a lot more choices of trim levels and options that will increase the price from that point. There is a Sport trim as well as a Sport Package that adds popular items such as heated front seats, heated door mirrors, and a power driver’s seat.
Robert Davis is the Senior Vice-President for Mazda’s U.S. Operations. Davis commented, “With the 2016 CX-9, we have lofty expectations, raising the bar with a quieter, smoother ride; a quicker, more responsive powertrain; and numerous other improvements. The CX-9 is our flagship and portends a future of innovative technologies and amenities that we believe will further elevate our vehicles in their respective classes.”
A Touring trim level for the 2016 CX-9 offers a lot of safety features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, keyless entry, power liftgate, power front seats, and more. The Grand Touring model adds Adaptive Front Headlights, 20-inch wheels, windshield active driving display, lane-departure warning, roof rails, and seat memory settings. The CX-9 Signature model is the topped-out trim level with Nappa leather interior, rosewood accents, LED accent grille lighting, and more premium touches.
All models of the 2016 CX-9 are powered by the turbo-charged SkyActive engine that produces 250 horsepower. The EPA mileage rating is 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and an average of 25 mpg overall for a front-wheel-drive configuration. The engine is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Davis concluded his remarks by saying, “Part of our focus during development of the new CX-9 was on ‘effortless transition’—the idea of juggling being a parent with an on-the-go lifestyle and then having a vehicle that can accommodate enjoying a weekend getaway with your significant other. Whether you need the space or just prefer its design and elegance, we believe CX-9 is an exceptional vehicle that will delight many new and returning customers to the Mazda brand.”
From the responses noted at the DFW auto show, the new 2016 Mazda CX-9 will be a definite hit among consumers looking at crossover SUV’s with premium touches in the mid-size category.
