Looking younger can be easy with the right makeup but what about looking younger naturally? Once we hit our late 20s or early 30s we may become aware of our face and how it’s changing. We may not notice much change until we hit our late 30s or early 40s. For some who take amazing care of your skin and health, it may even be until you hit 50 that you notice a major change in our skin. Or for some of us we want to those changes like – now! Aging skin is caused by years of too much stress, unhealthy and prolonged sun exposure, too many harsh and toxic chemicals in our food and water and an unhealthy diet. When we look at aging skin, we’re talking about changes you see in the mirror like skin sagging, drooping skin and fine lines and wrinkles that don’t seem to ever go away!
There’s a lot of information on the internet about what anti-aging creams you should use and what foundation, BB Cream or CC Cream will cover all your imperfections and some do. But what about aging under the skin and in your body? That’s where the real issue begins and is most often overlooked. So what can you do about aging skin and how do we prevent it? Skin aging is actually a clear reflection of what’s going on inside in our gut and our liver. Aging is directly related to our diet and how many toxins we are exposed to, not as much from genetics. Most of what ages us we can control with our diet and toxin exposure. Here are ten ways you can look younger and keep skin aging at bay.
1.) Eat a Clean Diet
Eating clean seems obvious but some people don’t see the direct connection. Clean eating is one of the most important things you can do for skin health because all disease begins in the gut. Your skin is a clear reflection of what’s going on in your digestive system and in your liver. So if you have dull, dry skin that looks wrinkly, dry and patchy – that’s a clear indication of too much toxins in your system. Try to fill half your plate with a fresh, organic fruit or vegetable at each meal. Buy local and farm fresh meats, poultry and fish to eat with fruits and veggies.
2.) Drink More Water
Yes, drink more water! Drink water throughout the day if you can – and right before meals to help you feel fuller. Add lemon in your water because it helps to detoxify the body and boosts immunity. Bored with water? Add a natural based, Non-GMO water flavor enhancer like “Stur” in fruit punch into your water to add a fruity and delicious flavor. Stur is sweetened with sweetleaf stevia and only has a few ingredients. It’s a safe, natural based sweetener that won’t cause insulin levels to spike and it also has zero calories. You can find Stur at Target and Walmart stores.
3.) Drink Green Tea
Anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects of green tea can delay signs of skin aging, such as sun damage, expression lines and wrinkles, according to a study published in the September 2010 issue of the journal “Collegium Anthropologicum.” Catechins in green tea may also help prevent skin cancer due to sun exposure, notes Pearl E. Grimes, author of the book “Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery for Darker Skin Types.” Green tea has been proven to combat skin aging because it’s loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. Other benefits include improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits.
4.) Take Whole Food Supplements
Taking a daily multi-vitamin that is Non-GMO and from whole foods is extremely important if you’re trying to detoxify your body from toxins and improve skin health. If it has probiotics – even better! Probiotics regulate gut health and remove toxins from our gut. The less toxins you have in our gut, the less you’ll age and breakout. Probiotics kill the bad bacteria and leave the good. Once you remove the toxins, your skin will glow, clear up and reflect the change.
5.) Eat Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely important for good health and our skin. These “good fats” in foods such as salmon, flaxseed, avocados, and almonds boost hydration, which keeps skin supple and firm. However, be wary of foods that contain harmful fats like saturated fat in dairy products and meats, which increase free-radical damage that makes skin more susceptible to aging. Try to limit saturated fat intake to about 17g per day.
Studies find that women who work out regularly have firmer skin than similar non-exercisers. It turns out that exercise infuses skin with oxygen and nutrients needed for collagen production. To keep your skin toned, make time for at least three 30-minute heart-pumping workouts per week. You can incorporate walking, running, swimming, yoga, pilates, barre or any sport you enjoy doing to get your weekly exercise in. You can also do an exercise video. Just do something and get your heart pumping.
Skin exfoliation is crucial to younger looking skin! We have layers of dead skin we cannot see to the negative eye causing toxins to build up which can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form. Exfoliated, hydrated skin rarely has any deep wrinkles. You can exfoliate every day, every other day or just once or twice a week. The best ways to exfoliate are the “Clarisonic” which cleans your skin six times better than the human hand, starting at $99 at Sephora and Ulta beauty stores. Clarisonic has scientifically been proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles so it’s completely worth the splurge if you can afford to invest a little more money in your skincare. You can also manually exfoliate with a natural based exfoliating scrub like “Alba Botanica Good & Clean” toxin release scrub, $5.59 available at Target, Walmart and most drug stores.
8.) Wash Your Face
Dirt, bacteria, and makeup left on overnight can irritate skin, clog pores, cause breakouts and age skin faster. Remove this top layer of grime with a gentle face wash every day and at night if you were makeup. Moisturize twice a day for dry skin and once a day for oily / combo skin after you clean and / or exfoliate your skin.
9.) Use a Lighter Concealer
Using a lighter concealer to highlight the face can make your skin look younger and will make you appear younger and give your face an instant lift! Highlighting has become really popular in the last few years because it really makes a difference in skin appearance. Pick a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your normal concealer for a lighter effect. First, apply your foundation or powder. Then draw lines on your face such as the “kitty cat highlight” (video instruction above) with the lighter highlighter, perferrable a highlighter in a crayon shape that’s natural based, non-toxic and cruelty free like Josie Maran’s Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon, $20 at sephora.com, josiemaran.com or in Sephora stores. Blend in the highlight areas in with your foundation and you’re done. If your not sure how to highlight using “the kitty cat” highlighting approach, you can watch the video instruction above or search on google.com or look on youtube.com for tutorials. If you’ve never highlighted your face before, you’ll notice the difference.
10.) Use an Illuminator
Just like highlighting, using an illuminator after your foundation or powder is important to get that glow we had when we were younger. Look for a natural based, non-toxic illuminating product with a pearl not a shimmer, like Drew Barrymore’s Flower Beauty highlighter chubby Glisten Up in “Pearl Shimmer”, $9.98 at Walmart stores. Flower beauty by Drew Barrymore, is Drew’s new natural, plant-based line available in Walmart. It’s not only a very high quality, natural based cosmetic line but also affordable and there’s a lot of gorgeous high performing products to choose from too! After you apply the highlighter and blend into your skin, apply the illuminator along cheekbones, under eyes, underneath the brow bone, down the nose or where ever you want a little extra highlight and glow.
