Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente managed to earn a point at the Omnilife Stadium with a 1-1 against Chivas de Guadalajara to close week 8 of the Clausura 2016 of La Liga MX. The Aztec dogs continue their undefeated streak on the road with two wins and two draws.
It didn’t take long for Chivas to get on the board. In the 6th minute the goats were able to pierce Federico Vilar’s net. Angel Zaldivar passed to Isaac Brizuela. “El Conejito” had cleared himself of his marker and came one-on-one against Vilar. With the Argentine off his line, Brizuela found the lower near corner for the 1-0.
But the lead did not last long as Xolos forced an error in the Chivas defense. With Tijuana on attack, Colombian Dayro Moreno attempted to center. However, defender Edwin Hernandez moved ahead of himself and sent the ball into his own net to put the game 1-1 in the 26th minute of play.
The first half was played mainly in the midfield with neither team doing much harm to each other the remainder of the 45 minutes. The closest to a real threat came in the 34th from Orbelin Pineda who’s shot hit the crossbar.
The night came undone for Xolos in the 57th minute when Elio Castro was sent-off for his second yellow card booking; and worse, it was in the penalty area. Castro leaned on a player with his forearm giving the referee reason to point to the spot and send him to the showers.
Omar Bravo, the all-time leading scorer for Chivas, took possession of the ball. Bravo fired to Vilar’s right. The Argentine guessed the direction and kept the ball from entering his net leaving the scoreboard unchanged.
For close to 30 minutes Xolos was on defensive. With a man-down, Coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera had to make defensive changes, leaving only Moreno at the head awaiting long-ball for a counter strike. Chivas made the effort, but could not get through the Tijuana defense.
Tijuana reached 11 points and is within a playoff position, same as Club Santos Laguna. Xoloitzcuintles will host Leon FC for week 9 at the Caliente Stadium. Chivas on the other hand, falls deeper into relegation woes, as Dorados de Sinaloa won their first game of the season on Saturday night. Dorados is in direct challenge with Chivas for relegation.
